Peeler Crab - what color orange is best ???

#1 Post by JOHN LYNCH »

I have noticed recently that peeler crab with the dark orange juices seem to attract fish more than the peeler crab with the pale orange juices.

Someone told me last year that one of the countries top match anglers throws away his peeler crab if it is does not have the dark orange juices. Obviously while match angling.

Is there a difference between a crab with dark orange juices and one with pale orange juices????

That'd be the female that is sending out the hormones that it is about to peel and hence ready to mate, the fish seem to be very sensitive to the female hormone.

It's easy peeled, really easy, and the knuckles of the joints underneath them are deep orange coloured as opposed to blue/green joints on males or lighter orange on females that aren't as close to popping.

At least that's my understanding thusfar, maybe someone else knows better.

I will give it s shot but as they say a picture paints a thousand words. If you look at the flap on the under side of the crabs the male one comes to a point and the edge of the flap runs more or less in a straight line from the base to the point.

The female on the other hand has a (bump) rounded bit sticking out about 1/3 of the way down from the point. Gives her a bigger area for carrying eggs.

If you collect your own, a female about to peel will almost always be covered by a larger male. So take the smaller one.

Did this make any sense :?: :? :)

When the female is under the Jack it's already a softy, it's already peeled.

Not entirely true the Jack crab will often grab a female crab before it starts to peel and hold onto it until it peels.

the jack will cover her days before she peels. I often get hard females under the jacks but can bring them on within two to three days.

Keep them away from the fridge if you want to bring them on. Room temp and cover in fresh sea water twice a day for an hour or so.
Hope this helps.
