Teelin + St.Johns Point (ish)
People me +2:
Duration:
wee beach near light house @ st.Johns, 7pm-6am
Teelin pier then rocks 7am-2pm:
Tide think it was high about 10pm then again around 11ish the next morning:
Weather fine turning to stormy and wet back to fine with wind then more rain (i think thats about average for a day in donegal lol???):
Bait squid, mack, lug, peeler, shrimp,:
Rigs 1up 1down, pulley pennel, booms, conger, jelly worms and feathers:
Results: Wee beach near st .johns was as barren as it looked nothing in 12hrs.
Teelin- Quite good sort off we all added a new species each to our lists, mate got his first conger, wee strap about 5lb, other mate got a massive star fish, i got a huge spider crab about 10" across its back
Catch and Release:: Yes was so tempted to keep the crab but wouldnt have a clue how to cook it so back it went
Report:
We randomly set out with a tent and headed for donegal, tried to find decent legal pitches near good spots but couldnt :(
had planned on fishing st johns point but it was too dark to venture down the rocks and thought wed try the wee beach, it looked really nice but sterile almost. it was.
plan was to fish the rocks the next day but the wind was blowing hard making the sea too rough so we head up to teelin.
Fished the pier for an hour and got nothing then i headed off wit the spinning rod exploring. tried a few rock marks and was amazed at just how deep the water was!
Got some good hits from im assuming big pollack, i just couldnt stop one with the wee bait caster (40lb braid though!) and it got me snagged, lost it. a few casts later with a black and red jelly i had a mammoth tussle for about 20secs then the hook snapped (bloody cheap nasty ebay hooks :( )
after that got my 2 mates round from the pier, first mate got the wee strap after about 10 mins think it was just over high tide, took a small mackrel bait on a 2/0 boom rig. i and another mate had conger/huss gear out, pulley pennel at all ranges and spinning with jellies and mack strip nothing worked! seems the fish went off the feed from high tide???
left the bait rods to it and continued spinning, when packing up i lifted one of the bait rods thinking there was lump of weed on the end, Id hooked a large spider crab through the leg lol!!! it wasnt happy!!
mate lifted his rod and hauled in a big grey/blue coloured star fish (dinner plate size about 2" thick and covered in horns)
good enjoyable time anyway even if the fish werent obliging
Next time............
ps Anyone ever tried spider crab or how to cook it? there the ones they get on Deadliest catch if you watch it on discovery?

Pity you couldn't get onto the Rocks at St John's - there are usually a lot of fish there....
There is a wee camping site just past the entrance to St John's Point (coming from Donegal), I think it is called Gallaghers....
Real shame that that Big Pollack bust you up mate - sickener
At least you got some new species...

St. John's Point Campsite
Stayed at that little campsite last year...a little gem. The owner told me then that he was retiring ..and closing site at the end of the 2006 season. I wonder if he has had second thoughts ....hope so
There's a great wee hostel/campsite in Dunkineely that I've used before, not 10 mins drive to St. John's point.

Very reasonable and friendly, highly recommended.

It was a spur of the moment sort of thing for us so didnt really have time to do any research on campsites etc, there were a load of likely looking spots where you could put a tent up but we got there quite late and didnt have much time to dark so we just set up on the beah as there was a sign saying it was public land. I think the area beyond the beach is owned by the lighthouse, im sure you could ask if they minded you setting up there?
also found a couple of spots at teelin but again not sure quite how legal it would be or if anyone would mind if you were to put a tent up.
loads of b&b's etc about the place too if you prefer that..
Will deffo be back up again try and get some of them pollock or see what else is in the depths up there.
Mate was fishing Teelin years ago and seen a John Dory caught from the shore. Im sure theres big conger and huss and other larger spiecies up round there
how close in do the tuna come lol??????
