Duration:21:00-08:00

Tide:Low through high, back to low again.

Weather:Mild, light rain.

Bait:Fresh Lug, rag, sandeel, crab, razor, frozen squid, mackerel.

Rigs:Clipped down paternoster pennel, three hook flappers.

Results: 3 bearded Rockling (thanks ron), shore rockling, freshwater eel (?), Coalie, 2 Codling.

Catch and Release:: Yes/No

Report:I decided to fish about 50 meters before the archway thinking the ground would be clean and I'd save tackle, I was wrong.
Right from the start I was losing tackle, was a bit annoying, luckily I had a full rig wallet and a stack of lead.
Started really slowly, first knock brought in a tiny rockling on the scratching rig, then a nice shore rockling came in on peeler off the main rig.

Cod fell to peeler, in fact it was the only bait that was producing, the sand eel was a bit of a letdown, but then it's not a bassmark but I was expecting a few dogs possibly.
All in all it was a good session, if you're interested in pics there are a few new ones in my personal gallery, I still can't figure out how to link images from my own gallery in here properly.

I'm pretty sure that was a strap conger that I got, can anyone confirm? It certainly taught me not to forget to put a swivel between main and rig. The whole flapper was wrapped around the little guy and I don't know if he made it when I popped him back, you can see the bruising along his side, was a bit annoyed about that, won't forget the swivel again anyway.

looks like a freshwater eel to me, strap congers are usually grey/blue/black in colour.. was it caught near an estuary/stream/river

nice catch though :D

I thought the colour was off for a conger alright, they have a more black-blue colour, there is a stream that runs down to the sea there about 50m from where I was fishing, but it's only a dribble, crazy that that thing would make it's way down it. Never saw a freshwater eel that was that green either though....????

I'm pretty sure that its a freshwater eel..Have caught many of them in course fishing and i used to catch alot in Dun Laoighre also...I know what ya mean about attaching a swivel too they can really mess up your traces.. :? :)

Twas wrapped in a ball in the line, and had a pointed tail a la eel, don't think it was a launce.

Check out the bigger photo in his profile pics..it has a different mouth to a launce dave sir..well as far as i know...now i'm doubting myself Dave :twisted:

as i stated before ... its a freshwater eel..

Color greenish-brown to yellowish-brown. It has small vertical gill openings that are restricted to the sides. The lower jaw is slightly longer and projects. The dorsal fin originates far behind the pectoral fins, whereas the anal fin originates slightly behind the anus and well back from the origin of the dorsal fin.

Ah pictures. I should have looked. Hasn't got the long dorsal fin of the launce right enough

thinking about were you caught that eel id be guessing strap conger i havnt caught fresh water eels anywere near there and they def couldnt be coming from the dribble come to think of it the nearest river is miles away

Defo freshwater eel. river dargle can be invested with them! and it is only around the corner from the tunnel on the north beach. WHO SAID LAUNCE :shock: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

i was goin by its eyes, very reminiscent to the launce!! but ive never caught a freshwater eel so im just a hypocrite :lol:

definately a freshwater eel, you can tell by the difference in size between its head and the rest of its body.

It seems it's a freshwater eel, sorry to doubt you there Steve but there were conflicting opinions and it looks lighter than any I've caught in freshwater before.

have caught them on north beach before. had doubles of them from inside the harbour aswell! they are not uncommon around here.
