SAI MA Comp No. 3 Little Killary, Co. Galway 21/04/2007

#1 Post by stevecrow74 »

People:Kraken, Alby, teacher, stevecrow74, donal domeney & harry, Seanibo, blaker, Colin Keogh, mickthepainter, Marco, croppyboy, keiran, Rampant Wreckfish, boycie89 ( i know i have forgotten somebody but cant think of who??)

Duration:5 hours

Tide:rising

Weather:miserable, constant rain and winds from behind

My Bait:Lug, Rag, Sandeel, mackerel and Squid

My Rigs:2 hook clipped up, pulley rig and a 3 hook flapper

My Results:dogfish and a thornback ray (39)

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:
we all met up in lenaun from 12pm at the carpark and in the cafe/grill where quite a few appetites were pleased, a couple of the lads were digging for bait in lenaun (must have had a good night the previous night), was finally introduced to the famed avatar of donal domeney.. yes, harry  looks like a big softie :D (beware of the owner should be on the fence)..
After waiting for everyone to show up we set off for little killary.
Then the rain started, after pulling peg number 14 back in lenaun i knew i was in for a walk, positioned between Kraken and Rampant Wreckfish i knew it woild be a long day of chatting, getting wet and blown about the beach.
It looked as if it would be a really hard days fishing until Seanibo hauled in a thornie, soon after Rampant Wreckfish followed up with a thornie.(wont mention the two mackerel they both caught) After finding out the bait that was catching was sandeel, it was time to change tactics from scratching in what ever you could call surf (no surf) to distance casting.. seeing as i had a rig set up with mack and squid i chucked it past the 100yrd mark and waited.. and waited, then tap tap the line went slack, and in came a doggie for me, just in time for me to measure a double shot of ray and doggie for Rampant Wreckfish.. then out went the sandeel, it wasnt a long wait then again tap tap, reeling in seemed a bit too easy, i thought i lost the fish until i noticed a ray skimming across the surface of the water, at this time Seanibo secured a second ray and Rampant was bringing a doggie.
the only other person who caught a fish by this stage was keiran with a flounder. Time for me to go for a walk.. after saying hello to all the lads on the lower numbers i made my way back to my peg and passed boyce89 who just pulled in a flounder. soon after Kraken pulled out a nice (and his first) Turbot and by this stage nearly every one was catching.Up our end of the beach all eyes were on Rampant and Seanibo who seemed to be bringing in fish all over the place and with teacher in the middle who hadn't caught anything, but that was soon cured when he landed his first ever thornie.
only a couple of people blanked by the end,
with species including dogfish, thornback ray, turbot, flounder and of course mackerel the weather didn't make it any easier on the spirits,
after scorecards were handed in with different degrees of sogginess points were counted, checked and re-checked...

positions were:
1st: Rampant Wreckfish
2nd:Seanibo
3rd: stevecrow74

after this a few of us went over and fished Little Killary itself, species caught there were whiting and dogfish.. i secured a doggie on ragworm tipped with mackerel.. rain persisted and winds picked up so it was agreed we'd all head to our relevant destinations.

Not much to add to that. The weather spoiled what should have been a really great outing for a lot of people. The driving rain was almost constant for the whole competition. The wind was cold. I don't think there will be too many photos of this one. Most people were just about coping with keeping lines in the water. A few people were forced to abandon early.

A few of us were keen to fish on afterwards. I wanted to try fishing into the fjord itself but the weather was against us. Plans to camp at Killary and fire up the BBQ had to be abandoned. In the end we had just a couple of casts off the headland before deciding that it was just too unpleasant.

Let's hope it doesn't get any harder than this.

If it wasn't for the obnoxious weather it was a really decent day looking at the numbers of fish caught. Got my first ever turbot which was nice too.
Car issues meant I had to sleep at Little Killary last night (bit of a lover's lane even in those conditions!)

Well done all, Congrats JP on stopping that dire run of second place finishes ( :D ) Glad to hear the beach fished for you all, shame about the weather. A good turnout too for somewhere as remote as Killary.

Gutted I couldnt make it but managed to get a couple of Complimentary tickets for Croker after the wedding on Saturday and Donegal putting Mayo to the sword yesterday (eventually...!!) more than made up for it :D

Roll on Mullaghmore.....
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D
