Sea trout-spinners

#1 Post by KK »

Was at my local estuary yesterday and seen a number of sea trout jumping, in only 6 inches of water at times. and I was wondering what would be my best tacticts to target them?? what type of lures or would bait fishing be a better method??

Form my limited amount of knowledge on this species (There are no other fish except Bass) :-)
I believe any small silver spinner retrieved fast close to the surface stands a chance of taking one. Tobys apparently do well but I have taken them accidentally on Kilty lures intended for Bass.

Make sure you get a license first before doing anything and if you do catch one think about conservation before clocking it over the head.

bait wise sandeels and mackeral belly strip work well

for spinners, flying C or mepps are probly as good as anything

have often seen them jumping like this in sligo, and coming in so close they almost beach themselves

for what its worth i have seen seatrout taken on sandeel when fish have been jumping/showing in the area ,

good luck, davy

I've taken them on "Cebar" or "Condor" bar spinners before when fishing for pollack

sea trout spinners

Hi

To which list I would add small German sprats and white deltas, and even small white Eddystone lures, all retrieved fast to mimic a sand eel in flight.

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Hi,

Find small dexter wedges (16g) and bridun launce (10g) to be excellent down here, cast like bullets on 6lb line.

I know guys who target them alot in Castlemaine Harbour and they swear by 40g+ dexter wedges ONLY - bluddy huge lures but the lads get a lot of white trout so can't argue with that!

Spinning for sea-trout can be very exciting, they put up a great fight, however I think that ledgering sandeels on the bottom is the best tactic by far.

Fishing at dusk and into darkness with a 3 hook flapper with size 2's baited with sandeel and a 3oz cannonball lead has proved very successful for me and others. Ideally with dusk coinsiding with LW.

I'll second John on that one, definitely the easiest way to catch 'em but you have to step up the gear a little for ledgering. I get away with lighter stuff spinning

try a tazmanien devil..for best results use one with all black one side and all white on the other! or another good one is all silver with a yellow tip!

iv just stocked up on the small abu krill, i havent had any success yet (tried for 2hours last night), but have witnessed someone catch consistently with one, and seen pics of another catching!
seems to be anything small and silver!

Had 2 on my last trip to dingle on a green mackerel imitation 20 g bass bullet. So not small and shiney its about 4-5 inches long. Caught bass to, its a deadly lure. Definitely my favourite.
