The Sportsmag has a domed left hand end plate and to center the spool a plastic spacer is clipped onto the spool(this was originally designed to drive the level wind on CS models) and it acts like a fan, adding braking to the spool during a cast. This can be replaced with a spacer but unless you are going for maximum range or intend to use the reel for field casting it's not much of a problem.

The Mag-Elite does not have this and as such is ready to go as a casting reel straight from the box although the bearings may need to be checked first( the last few Abu's I bought the bearings were scrap  ). Also, the Mag-Elite has a knob on each end plate to allow the spool to be centered exactly.

The reels are indentical in every other way so there is no difference in winding power etc.

Hope this helps
