People:Myself and Davy

Duration:7hrs

Tide:low water 11.30 ish

Weather:overcast light ssw wind

Bait:Rag

Rigs:single hook paternoster ,floats,baited shrimp rig

Results:pollack,ballan,corkwing,goldshinny,shanny,poorcod, pouting ,tompot blenny , long spined sea scorpion .

Catch and Release:: Yes/No

Report:Decided to head to the rocks at ardglass today for a bit of a species hunt for a bit of craic ,Arrived to find the wind blowing along the rocks and making things abit uncomfortable so we headed to strangford via ballyhornan for a nosey ,when we got to strangford the spare ferry was tied up at the end of the wee pier so that was there scapped to

After a bit of head scratching we decided to head back to ardglass and find a spot in the lee of the wind ,the first mark we tried produced a load of pollack to 2lb on the float gear but not much else so we headed along the shore a bit further to another gully we knew of ,it was a bit slow for an hour or 2 then davy produced the first tompot of the session shortly followed by wrasse ,by this stage all i was catching was poorcod and sea scorpions ,once the tide started to drop the fishing picked up a bit on the light gear and i managed my first tompot blenny for a while .
Not a bad wee session for the time of year with 9 species mostly small but the pollack making 2lb .

you forgot to mention that i won the species hunt with 9 species to your 8

the last couple of hours was good fun and i didn`t expect to see three tompot blenny`s

this was one of the better coloured sea scorpions.

You guys are quite amazing. I have fished ardglass anf Bangor off and on for 30 years and never seen a wrasse let alone caught one.

Do you use special light tackle for the mini species or do you just use smaller hooks on the usual set-up.

Bangor has always been full of wrasse.There are four different species ballan,corkwing,goldsinny and occasionally rockcook.For the big wrasse we use 3lb test curve pike rods and for the mini species we use the "famous" mini rods.The mini rods are 4'6" ugly stix kids rods with a small multiplyer loaded with 25lb mono,hook size depends on what we`re after,it could be anything from size 6-3/0.Anywhere you find weed you`ll find wrasse so Bangor and Ardglass are perfect

is this always the case? i have a particular mark in mind that used to be v good for pollock but they seem to have either been fished out or moved on and i was thinking of giving the wrass a go, the only thing is that the tide strips here so at low water the kelp beds can become exposed, do you think that these areas will still hold wrass or will i just try elsewhere??

The wrasse will come up through the kelp as the tide covers the ground ,you can get half decent fish in a couple of feet of water .

So, ragworm on a float gear close to the weedy rocks at the base of the platform on thge North pier = Wrasse.

Excellent. Pity I don't have to cast 80yds though.

Thats the problem ,alot of people are trying to hit the horizon and actually casting baits away from fish holding spots ,depending what your after a fair few fish can be caught within 20 yards .

Spot on there Ronald. I gathered up 90% of my points in last year's club master angler with fish caught within 10 yards of where I was standing - Ramore Head and St John's Point were the best spots for these tactics.

You're lucky that camera was far away Dave, and the fact that you were kneeling.... Couldn't really pick up on how short you really are....
