with the amount of high quality casting fixed spools on the market now i wouldnt doubt it.
i think tackle manufacturers are finally coping on to the fact that not every one can use a muliplier (or has the patience to learn). also i much prefer fixed spool at night or when speed fishing in a match where you just cant afford a birdie

i am confident using a multiplier at night, however i reckon using a fixed is more accurate- good for having dogs queing up to take your baits! multipliers are rated for there winching power, however a fixed spool is less tiring when reeling in trebbles. retrieve is higher on standard fixed spools.
tried pendelum casting with 65lb braid at weekend with no shock on fixed spool and it sailed out. no snap offs(it was safe- no one around).
if your twitchin baits on multiplier u can ruin the line lay if not careful. it's more tedious.

i generally prefer fixed spools for most situations, i dont do a lot of distance stuff so they suit my needs.
for speed of retrieve, getting big ray, wrasse and conger up over rocks i would use a fixed.
for heavy duty boat or clean ground stuff it would be a mult for winching power.
use a fixed about 75% of the time

i would be of the lack of patience to learn fraternity - not too interested in the distance cassting - but as has been said already - the newer fixed reels are beginging to hold their own

Had a crap experience one night with a multiplier and missed out on a few bass. I basically got a birds nest at the wrong time. My mate beside me took two good bass in a row while I was crying on the beach..! :-) Approx 6Ib fish.
I had hooked a bass and started to reel in and the reel just stopped. Bass got off. I could tell it was a similar sized fish to my mates two.
Never used it since. Its an Abu Mag Elite. Gathering dust.
Dont need to distance cast much for Bass so no need for it

10 reasons why multipliers are better than fixed spools
1. 4 multipliers in a beta box take up less room than two fixed spools.
2. Multipliers don't get mixed up as kitchen equipment.
3. Fixed spools making that awful creaking sound bringing in a weight.
4. Multipliers have produced some of my best fish a night because I birdied up the reel and bait was left 30 yards out.
5. Ever try and cast a fixed spool low down. Ouch.
6. A top of the range fixed spool come in at around 300 euros.
7. Bail arms snaping back in the cast on fixed spools = crack.
8. Line getting caught under the FS spool.
9. Multipliers look cool.
10. You may be a crap angler but once you produce a multiplier and 400 euro rod you'll fool them all.

multipliers v fixed spools.
multipliers have not really changed in 30 years, while fixed spools
have come on leaps and bounds , the top end fixed spools are
certainly the match for any multiplier althogh the draw back would
be the price, some costing upto 300 quid and more.

No,both have their own place in angling.Depend on what technique, condition and which one you prefer most.Use the right tool on the right time.I prefer multiplier, but theres a time that using multi will limit my ability and chance of catching fish.Multiplier is more about skill....some ppl will depend on the braking system either magnetic or centrifugal 100% on each cast....some really know their tool verry well and dont rely much on the braking system, this kind of guys dont have a problem casting in pitch black on a windy night, they know when to feather the spool and when to stop them just by the sound of the spool and the feeling.
Theres a feature that u dont have in multy, the sound of drag when the big one taking off pulling your line out of the spool....nice sweet sound....theres also no nice feeling of strugling fish in the end of line unless the fish is big enuff when using fix spool....the design made fix spool less sensitive....
When lure fishing, multi will cast more accurately compare to fix spool. In japan, lure fisher stalking for 'hira suzuki' or sea bass from the shore using the 'tactic run and gun' using fix spool so that they can cover more water in short time without having to deal with the bird nest. For lure angler on the boat in tokyo bay, stalking for seabass in the port, break water and jetty area, which they have to cast the lure under the wharf/jetty accurately, are using multi because they need the accuracy which fix spool cant offer.
But personally....multi still the best.....just my 2 cent.......

Here is my 11 :D reasons why Fixed Spools are better that Multiplier Reels.
1) You don't have to worry about Line Lay on a fixed Spool. It is automatically done to perfection for you.
2) Never get a Birds Nest.
3) Never have to worry about getting a Birds Nest.
4) Don't have to stop your spool from revolving before it hits the water in order to prevent an over run.
5) Pretty much Maintenance free compared to a Multiplier.
6) Fishing in darkness is not a problem.
7) Retrieve is super fast compared to a multiplier. When fishing Rough Ground you can get your lead up and over snags much easier.
8) You can have as many spare spools as you want for your FS, each one been at a different Breaking Strain.
9) Don't have to pack 10 reels, just in case you have a bad days casting.
10) Can use braid easily with a FS.
11) Much handier for match angling and Scratching in general.
Overall the Multiplier reel seems a very backward piece of equipment when you look at the above. Why would some someone choose a multiplier over a Fixed Spool reel ????
I think that people should use a FS for 75% of their angling as it does a better job for this 75%.
Just the opinion of a fixed spooler.
Donagh I have oiled the handle of my reel. It is squeek free now.
