Identification - Brill or Turbot?

#1 Post by teacher »

Brill or Turbot? Sorry, the photos aren't ideal for identification. The pictures were originally more for novelty value :D

Turbot are very round, I think Brill are more elongated, a bit like flounder. I stand corrected however as I have only ever caught Turbot.(I think :D )

and here was me thinking that it was turbot that were lighter in colour..

(the darkness of the fish depends on the area it was caught)

brill have larger darker patches than turbot do...

the nose of a brill is also slightly more rounded than the turbot's

its actually hard to tell from that photo.. but my gut feeling is brill 8)

Identification - brill or turbot?

Having been lucky enough to catch both brill & turbot in the one session, I would say a 'turbot'. There is a distinct difference between the two. Fishinmidget's got it right brill are more elliptical in shape.

I would agree with cortaz on the mouth shape.....turbot have a sort of very obvious extending mouth sort of and with brill its not so obvious.

Corby, what are the first 3 words of my reply....

Lumpy is right , it's the sure way of id'ing the fish. With out this been known the fish would have to be on a flat surface to see the shape of the fish.
Best is to go back and catch it again and get a better pic.
