I was thinkin of building my own rod from scratch...obviously get a century or zzippy blank and go from there..is it expensive to build a very decent rod...and most of all is it hard...i intend to take my time and do a small bit to perfection each time, instead of taking on to much and messing it up... id want to customise the whippings and all my own cosmetics, but to get the guides right and spaced properly, would it be too technical?

Rod building is really easy, just take your time, and if you are not 100% happy with the whipping, just do it again.
http://www.mudhole.com has everything you need as well as some rob building videos.
The pleasure you get from using your own hand made tackle is great.
Ps, don't bother with reccommended ring spacings, tape em on with insulating tape until you think they look right, put a reel on the rod, run the line up the rings and hang a weight off the end, as long as the line doesn't touch the blank anywhere you will be ok.
For a 13' Zippy with the reel mounted in the low position you need the following rings. 30. 25. 20. 16. 16. 12. 12. 10. 10. and tip ring.
I use single leg rings for the first 4 after the tip. and the butt ring will usually be 4" or so down from the joint on the butt section.
In my opinion do not use a Diamite tip ring, they groove. attach your ring using hot melt glue, a great tip is to slice off some slivers and put them into the ring itself, and heat it with a lighter, much easier and less messier.

Caution...once you build one yourself,you wont look back and get hook....and spending more to build more rod....

Never see people using this on surf rods.....maybe u can fix it low permanently....should look nice and feel good on the grip too......if i am not mistaken,u need to under wrap your guide....not on spinning rod as i am concern.....determine the spine of the blank before u wrap them with guide.....the thread have size.....theres NCP and nylon other than metallic.Nylon thread u hav to put colour preserver before applying epoxies,if not the colour of the thread will become dark(if you concern to build a presentable rod)....NCP thread dont need preserver.If can get a Flexcoat for epoxies....gudebrod for thread.....dryer is not necessary unless ur really2 hook to rod building and planning to build more beautiful rod in future....for the supply....other than mudhole....good luck....

Ok.. you need the following.
NCP thread in which ever colours you need, it comes in various sizes, the thicker is easier too use, and better for a beginner, but the thinner gives you a better finish.
You need an epoxy coating. I use flexcoat lite (2oz), and give the whipping 3 coatings.
You need a very sharp blade such as a scalpel.
You need a burnishing tool to get rid of gaps in the thread.
you will need to file the feet of each ring to allow the thread move up the foot without gaps.
You will need a roll of masking tape, or insulating tape.
You will need a very sharp scissors.
You will need some 15lb line.
You will need a china pencil to mark the rod.
You will need a hairdryer with a low setting.
You will need hot melt glue.
Flexcoat do a rodbuilding booklet which will give you a lot of tips.

Hi Dave....

Do you know where i can get flexcoat here in ireland.i usually order all my supplies from states or japan,just curious if there any supplier around since u seem to be the local builder,maybe a tips or two on where can i easily get the supply.Thanx in advance.Cheerss...

I used to use a rod epoxy from seymo, which was great, I got it from peter horne 021 4385072, not sure where you can get the flexcoat, i know you can get it off e-bay, but some of the bigger dublin tackle shops should have it or an equivalent.

You only need two coats....it does need to be turned for 5 to 6 hours while drying though....IMHO it is the best on the market.
