Stop Knot??

#1 Post by Mr_Green »

i still cant post new topics in Q&A so here it goes...is power gum absoloutly essential for stop knots or will amnesia do, since it has a wax like quality when knotted?

Thats a good question, i've neen making rigs the last week or so and like yourself i have been using Amnesia as i have no powergum..but i'm sure it would be fine as long as it wasn't tied to tight..but i could be wrong..hope i'm not though :)

u can use anything really! 10lb mono is prob best but 15lb is fine too. stop knots can see a lot of wear and tear. sometimes they need replacing. have line spare for this or use telephone wire.

I only use telephone wire. Never have any problems with it, once you master the art of putting it on.

It depends what you are using the stop knot for, If you are using it to stop a float up the line then light mono is best. For anything else its a personal choice.

on snoods when i need a stop knot i use a small bit of tubing and pass the line though twice, pull tight and the tubing turns round making an adjustable stop knot, for floats i use a rubber band easy to move and replace with a simple knot

used to use really thin diameter rig tube- about 2mm piece cut off role. much neater than the longer cuts recommended by sea angler and does not crease the line which wrecks my head. started using stop knots on lines under 20lb as they are much neater. no crease. 3 turn grinner enough for bait stop and 5 better for bead trapped wivels...

I'm tying some rigs today and am finding the tubing to be the biz. The stuff I'm using is actually the protective stuff that is sometimes on the barbs of trebles when you buy a lure, I suppose it's rig tubing.
Great job in any case for a sliding stop knot below the snood on a 50lb rig body to allow it to slip down the line and lift the weight up and away from snags.

I use a bead its not ideal as it kinks the line but it is easy to move it to change length.

it depends on what your using the stop knot for, if its for rigs then i would use mono of about 10 to 15lb as it only has to be moved a short distance. however if it is for float fishing then i use powergum as it doesn't burn the line when moving it over a larger distance, because mono can burn the mainline.

if not powergum then i use either telephone wire or a small piece of tubeing ,i find the telephone wire much harder to move when put on tight so for snoods, the small piece of tubeing would be fine.for the likes of rigs which may need ajustment i use telephone wire below the bottom bead so the snood can be ajusted a crimp does not allow this so i dont use them on the bottom bead on any snoods.its the buisness.

After trying powergum, telephone wire and silicone tubing, I now use pre-molded silicon rubber bait stops. They're very quick to put on and very secure. You can buy them in bunches of about 20 attached to something that looks like plastic ring pull from a beer can. They can usually be found in the coarse section of most angling shops.

That's probably why they are called bait stops and not float stops then!

the best float stops are a bead above the float and tie on part of a rubber band, it stays put until you move it and in my job they are easy to get

Thin elastic/rubber bands. Cut 1 side of the loop and you have got basically the same idea as powergum. Easy to tie with the same knot you use for power gum and slide into place. Mightn't be as strong as powergum but the elastic bands are really cheap and you can get alot of stops from 1 packet. I've never had a problem using them although you need to use saliva to put them up neatly. I've also seen those kids toy balls that come in different colours, the ones that look like a load of elastic bands tied into a ball and the ends cut to make only what can be described as a prickly ball? You can buy them with fairly long dangly bits, again you can get loads of stops from them but they need to be the fairly big ones.
