People:Me & the Missus (mistake!)

Duration:Two & half hours (see above why it wasn't more!)

Tide:Last 2 hours of flood

Weather:Sunny, slightly windy

Bait:Mackerel, Sandeel

Rigs:Single hook clipped & 2 hook flapper

Results:Small Dab & 2.5lb Sea Trout

Catch and Release:: Yes/Yes

Report:Beautiful day, got there just as the water was flooding the lower areas of the beach. First cast on the flapper rig had a lovely litlle dab, hidden in amongst a massive bunch of sea weed. About 10 mins later there was a huge bite on the single hook, then went slack. I wound in slow and it took off jumping and going mad! Great fish. Went very quiet after that and she got bored. The best bit was, she went to the shop and missed both fish! (That'll stop her coming back.)

Right on the mouth of the estuary next to the car park. Swamped by passers by and about 5 kids arrived trying to fish with no bait and cobbled together kit. Gave them the remains of the Mack when I had to go. Took the trout on the first cast, just to the right hand side as the water flooded the low area of beach. Same with the dab.

I think ya can get around the other side of the estuary if ya were looking for a bit of peace. ive never fished it but was up there last year and there was a good few people spinning for sea trout. Not a bad result in that bright sunny weather

aye, the first hour was good, but it went really quiet after that. I reckon the area will fish really well in the low to flooding tide. Gonna get there earlier next time. Have you been back out in Wicklow?

I can probably make it, the missus has the car but I'll be able to taxi it. What time where you thinking? Looks like high tide is 8.30ish. I should be able to get there for around 7. As you can see from the post above the sand bank outside the car park is where I was on Sunday. I had a drive past last night and there were 2 or 3 other fellas spinning. The trout were jumping but there was a seal about. PM me if you wanna meet up

was spinning here last night, plenty of trout jumping, mostly small, spun from 6.30 to 9.00 with everything from a small mepps to a wedge and toby. Couldnt tempt one, 2 other lads spinning and they couldnt either, dont know why, probably a combination of the seal, ridiculously calm sea and the commotion from every dog that came past diving into the channel, plus the loving fathers of malahide that are intent on teaching there kids how to throw stones right beside the frustrated poor angler.
Now i know why lads say it fishes better from the donabate side, its a long walk so theres rarely anybody down there so the trout probaly have confidence to feed on that side. im goin to take the trek with the fly rod over the weekend.

If the sea trout are jumping, it's probably a sign that they're not feeding...

what would be the best tactic in malahide, fish in to the channel itself or go sea/estuary side a bit? never fished for sea trout before but live in swords so will have to have a crack, would they go for a worm on a float rig? has anyone ever seen the shoals of mullet under the bridge where the river runs in to the estuary.. youll see them on a warm summer day, they head up stream by the hundred, iv always thought they spawm up there i.e they wouldint be feeding but theve been caught, hard to fish for them with without spooking them...

nialler, I reckon that fishing the channel right on the edge on the flooding tide will be best. Being honest have fished the area a few times and only ever got small fish by casting into the channel. Too many crabs too.
