Rule of thumb: 10lbs of shockleader for every ounce of lead to be cast. eg 40 lb leader for casting 4 ounce leads, 60 lb shockleader for 6 ounce leads.
ESSENTIAL FOR BEACH/SHORE ANGLING!!!
Stay away, far far away, from anyone beachcasting that's not using a shockleader.
Crackoffs can break bones, cause other serious injuries, even potentially kill.
How's your insurance?

Having said that, when I'm uptiding from a boat, I don't use a shockleader. If you start your cast with your bait/lead hanging outside the boat the it's safely away from the rest of the crew; and there's nobody else around within miles to hit with a crackoff.
So, 18lb line straight through onto a Penn 535 or a Morrum 7700CL. :D

id say the lads you see using no shockleader are probably fishing with 30Lb line straight through - this heavier line will absorb the shock and stop crackoffs lads use this line when fishing snaggyu areas or when thers alot of floating weed abbout which requires a strong lint to pull in fish and a kilo or two of weed.

Even with 30lb main line I still use a shockleader....if your fishing over rocks the 30lb will get nicked and weakened quicker than the 60-70lb leader.
