Name this fish....

a handful of these turned up in a push net at the weekend, I havent come across them before, can anyone identify what it is? For the record, they have a slightly stubby head, 2 dorsals and a deeply forked tail. The biggest might have made 10cm or so.

Was talkin to the lad that made me the push net and he thinks they are sand smelts...I stand to be corrected though :idea: Cool wee fellas although no where near the 20cm :D

Yeah they look like sand smelts pete ,get one on a hook and line then enter it in the species hunt :lol: not sure what bait to use though ,maybe a tiny piece of worm .

Size 18 hook maybe..definetly think if you were on a mad species hunt you could try and nab one. On that particular push we got around 6 of them so they may be quite abundant

How bout posting a pic of the push net Pete? Think I used something similar for shrimp in the surf in France about 20 years ago but just wonder how similar they look...

deffo a sand smelt.......jp(rampent wreakfish) caught some of the end of a local pier that might have made 20cm........great pike bait. i think he got them to a small bit of rag.

is a push net the one on skis sort of? the net splits either side of yourself - remember getting loads of flatties using one of those in seapoint dublin
