NewBie Penn Combo
Looking for some help, I have'nt fished in years and I'm looking to buy a new rod and reel for beach fishing. I want to get a multiplier, after reading alot of the threads on the forum I'm going to get a penn 525mag (latest version) but want to combine this with a good rod, bascially not sure what lenght of rod I should get. I'm around 5' 10 if that helps. Was havin a look at veals website and they have some combo of penn gear that seem good value. This will be my first multiplier so want to learn to use it properly with a good rod, my budget is around 400 for rod and reel.

first rod and reel :?: ...if its a multi ur after , id go for the penn superMag xtra roughly 200 euro, and fairly forgiving..If u want a decent rod id recommend either, Century Ccc Ld, Greys Triplex, Penn affinity all suited for clean/medium/mixed ground work...and all multi rods...for extra distance id get a longer rod, but if its ur first time using a multi u may want to slow down a little and crawl b4 u walk..ives till got my L plates on myself  ... triplex's and affintiy have got 16ft versions...

The multi and rods from penn are all worth a look. I have a few penn rods still in use with no problems but there all discontinued and have 3 of the old 525mags with no troubles. I'm not so sure about the fixed spool reels. Firstly where are you fishing and is that 400 euro or sterling. Give you local takle shop a chance but if they don't match veals for price go with veals.
I can only say whats my opinion but make up your own mind. Alot people on forums recommend a rod and reel just because its the one they bought and don't know any better. Its worth spending money on a decent reel. Assumming your beach fishing I'd recommend spending money on a decent Fixed spool in the 90 sterling bracket with a long rod of around 15 foot such as the penn power stix but go more expensive if you want. If you stay on the cheap side with the rod it leaves money for all the other stuff that can be more important like decent rain gear. This can always be used if and when you progress in a multi. The fixed spool is then there as a back up when you've nested up a reel.
Personnely I'd only buy a multi with a 13 foot rod and if your intending to put time into learning to cast. If your not and theres lots that don't stay with a fixed spool reel. Most long rod users use a fixed spool with braid for distance over using a multiplier.
If you do go for a multiplier than the 525mag shoud be slow enough starting out once the extra 2 mags are fitted and you use 0.37mmm line with the level kept a few mils under the lip. The spool bearing can be cleaned and can be oiled with liquid grease if your still have troubles.

Thanks Donagh for the reply, I plan to fish along the east newcastle, greystones wciklow etc. I'm confused now as to what to buy, so a fixed spool + a longer rod (approx 15ft) would be a better setup for starting off again. I'll have to a trip to the local tackle shop and see what they have on offer. Thanks for the replies

Hi David,
I think that setup would be best but different people will have different opinions. It can be confusing alright with the amount of rods out there. You just have to put your money down and take a chance. Anglers starting out have been turned off sea fishing by multipliers. They aren't suited to novices. Once you get setup meeting other anglers on the site you can see in the flesh what gear is out there.

alright david, if u want to test out any roids b4 u buy them, best to go to ur local tackle ship, and not be duped in2 buyin 1 by their witty comments and smart tactics, no one wants to lead u astray, but it can be confusing...the rods i spoke of are decent rods, i dont own a triplex but i have the other 2...and all of them are very respectable, as donagh says bout the multis is very true..i spent ages getting used to a fixed spool b4 i moved on2 multis...so donagh is right in that regard... but as for rods, im sure a few lads wouldnt mind meetin up with u and letting u try them out, im in waterford so if ur down this way u can have a lash no bother man!! slan leat

Thanks lads for all the replies, I have on order from henrys in Dublin the penn affinity 16ft (280euro) and two reels online from veals a 525 super mag xtra and a pen surfmaster 750. My father has a 13ft beach which he does'nt use, so I have that to match up with the multipier. Donagh can you recommend a good braid for the FS reel.

I recently had the same situation. I was advised to go with the 525 mag. Girlfriend, in a remarkable feat hitherto unknown went and bought me the Super Mag! I was lucky enough to meet up with one of the lads off the site for some tips. I would highly recommend that you do something similar.
