I recently bought myself a 14ft greys triplex along with a 2nd hand(as new) 535 GS for just 200euro off e-bay :D , but this post isn't just to brag about that!
The new purchases threw up some questions 1) Can anyone suggest a decent fixed spool reel to match the triplex?, the okuma I'm using at the mo seems quite heavy on it. Don't want to exceed 75euro.
Total novice here with a multi so excuse the stupid questions  Had a few casts and short range was no bother but if I tried to put in any power a brdy inevitabley followed. 2) Now, how does a birds nest actually happen? If I can be educated on that I'm sure prevention will be easier.
Any help is welcome :D .........
couple of questions

Hiya Col, a 535 GS is too big really for general shore fishing. It also suffers as it has no mag braking system so would be a complete pig to control when casting. That reel belongs on a boat TBH.
As far as your first question is concerned re: decent FS reel, what about one of the new Penn Surfmasters? You should be able to pick one up within your budget. Beware of cheap FS reels, you will destroy them in no time. If you can hold on and save a few quid, buy a Grauvell Zeus...they are the absolute bizz. Keep your eye on ebay too for something from the Daiwa Emcast range, they are fairly bulletproof.

Thanks for the quick reply pete. I was offered the 535 basically free of charge because the seller tought the rod postage was fairly heavy so asked if he'd throw in a 535 for free ( it wasn't part of the auction). Well, I was never exactly going to say no to that!
I figure it might serve as a handy tool to train myself in multi casting and undersatnd it's not a clean beach reel but I tought that mabye I could use it over rough ground?
Surfmaster and emcast are def an option, I can prob delay he purchase for a while longer so maybe by then a zeus could be on the cards, how much do they normally go for?
Oops, didn't see your post there Al, thanks.

I got a Mustad reel a couple of months back, cant remember the model though, first trip out gears started crunching and slipping....it went back. It was a smaller sized surf casting reel and deffo not the Centurian. Col, if you can master casting a 535gs with bugger all braking then no multiplier holds any fear for you.. Nice deal that all the same.

Mad Mo
I have heard of the same problem you experienced with the Mustad reels Pete, with the gears slipping after just a few sessions.
Been looking at the Surfmaster myself but heard allot of good reports about the Zeus, so still undecided as to which one to pair with mu 16ft Triplex.
As for the 535GS, it is a great rough ground reel, and although it don't have magnetic braking it does have centrifugal breaking and is quite easy to cast when set up properly. Make sure the break blocks are clipped to the outside of the pin they sit on or they wont work (look in the manual that comes in the box), and put some thicker oil in the bearings.
I agree its not a reel that i would recommend to someone starting out using a multiplier though.

You can reduce the line level too. If you have it filled to the edge of the spool, when you lay on the power in the cast, the spool spins at a high speed as the line comes off and with no braking continues to spin fast when it should be slowed down by the brakes. This makes the inner spool spin faster than the line can come off. Lower the line level by a couple of mm and the spool will keep up with the line going out.

Have a pair of the older surfmasters and found them 100% although have heard that the quality of build in the new ones is not as good. Changed over before Christmas to the Grauvell Zeus, serious cranking machine....although I ordered a second one and when it arrived the spools couldn't be changed and had to send it back. I think some of the other lads have had issues with the Zeus too :?

Thanks for the suugetions and help lads.
Looking for something that will help with the casting so just wondering if the Surfmaster or any of the others are suitable for braid, say 50lb?
Is there much difference between an emcast advanced, pro and evo? :? I'll stop asking questions soon, promise.

30lb braid is more than adequate Col to be honest. I wouldnt step up to 50 if I were you, you would lose the advantage of the lower profile at that BS. As far as the emcasts are concerned, I had an Emcast plus 6000, lovely reel but a little heavy, I've had a play with most of the range but havent come across any huge differences in them aside from cosmetic. I googled them a while back and got loads of info but I cant remember the link.... They are a nice reel and work well with braid. I used 30lb powerpro and it flew. Loads available cheap enough on ebay too.
