Jonny,
Take the rod and place the spigot behind your knees...keep your knees closed and grab each side of the spigot in each hand...keep the rod tight behind your knees and start to open your knees against your hands...the extra power in a straight direction will part the 2 sections.
It works, even on a cold night back at the car, many do it that way on a stuck joint.
Tom.

in my experience of the sections sticking... twist and pull seems to be the only thing that works... make sure the sections are dry and your hands are dry...
hold the outer section on the spigot about 6" from the join and the inner section from the spigot 12"- 18" from the join.. hold the inner section firm while applying a twist to the outer section.. when you feel movement start to pull whilst still twisting....
this works for me 95% of the time.. the rest requires brute force...
also.. if there is a butt cap that can be removed .. do so.. it stops any vacuum that will be created while pulling at the sections, which doesn't help in freeing the sections...

A trick that can work is to wrap a bag of frozen peas around the male part of the spigot about 2" up from the join for 5 mins or so, then you should be able to get it apart... hopefully.. (use 2 people twisting in 2 different directions.)
A great trick even with brand new rods is to get yourself a 4 or 6B pencil and rub it all over the male part of to spigot till its covered in the graphite, this will lubricate it and it will never get stuck again..
Also always clean the spigot before assembling it with a cloth, the biggest culprit for causing spigots to stick is usually ONE grain of sand..

I've heard the bag of frozen peas works, but it must be on the male side of the spigot joint...here is why....by far the 3 biggest causes of sticky joints in carbon rods is heat, cold and humidity.
Humidity will cause the male joint to swell = stuck joint
Cold will cause the female joint to shrink = stuck joint
Heat will cause the male joint to swell = stuck joint
Another factor that will work with these 3 points to make matters worse is to not clean the inside of the female (normally butt) out...the male is easy to clean, you just need to take your closed hand down it to take any carbon dust off...but if you dont put a rag or a paper towel inside of the female and clean the carbon dust out, then sooner or later it will build up and jam the joint shut.

Its the same in a wooden chest with draws or sometimes even your front door, they will shink and swell with either heat, cold or humidity, carbon fibre is no different, to a lesser degree and depending on how well it is sealed with the resin of the blank but it will react the same.
There is a very fine line in a good quality rod that is allowance for wear and problematic for jamming.

Hello Jonny,
I hope you got sorted, if you didn't have a look at this link
http://www.jmldirect.com/product.php?cid=4&pid=219
I got the previous version of this product, basically a roll of material, but it grips anything.
Grip a section of rod with each hand using this material, unless the pieces are welded together or are chemically bonded you should be able to separate them (the presence of brute force is taken as a given :D )
I still have some of the material so if you're still desperate PM me and I'll send you enough to use.
(Anyone curious can PM me and I'll send on some, as I have loads of it left)
