Am in the market for a new rod and was hoping to get some help in choosing what to go for
I have about €200 to spend (give or take a bit for P+P)..
I want to use this for fishing fairly clean ground and also use it for casting in new casting club as well.
Preferably rung for a multiplier (though not tied to this), nothing less than 14ft long and able to handle up to 6oz comfortably.
Any links to dealers (with special offers too) if ye have them would be greatly appreciated.
Please dont tell me to do a search on the forum cos there is so much out there its doing my head in.
id go for something in the greys range john...for the guarantee...most greys rods can handle a good cast and have great all roung ability!! id recommend the apollo http://www.gerrysfishing.com/shop_sub_c ... bID=1&m=72 a bit more than 200 but if u order from gerrys u get 90 quid worth of luggage free..i got it today nad theres loads..a rucksack,rod hodall, rig wallet and handy big bag (im goin usin it for shopping lol) ...def worth a look anyway john
I'd say you'd be better if you could hold off until the club is up and running before you commit.This would give you the opportunity to try a lot of different rods and should help you find one that suits you.As a member of the Ulster casting club I was able to spend a lot of time trying different rods but as soon as I picked up the 14' Apollo I knew it was the rod for me well priced,well finished and capable of distances that I could only dream of
The only other thing I can say is,as for fairly clean ground fishing the Apollo may be a bit of over kill.
Don't buy a rod on e-bay. In fact getting a rod posted is dodgy. Look at the number of members of this forum that have had to wait months or got their rods delivered with a part broken. But from your local shop.

You know, the sad reality of it is alot of us cant afford to buy a nice rod in our local tackle shop.....i.e. if i was to get a daiwa sandstorm in a local tackle shop it would cost 200 euro ....and i would have to order it in not knowing when it would come.
Haven't made up my mind yet - my head is still wrecked from the choices available - gonna keep looking around - have shortlisted a few with some help from those who will remain nameless
Will be in waterford next week so will run into John O'Briens to see what he has - local shop has jack s*** in the way of decent rods

Ordered a K2 Extreme Titanium 16'8 directly after breaking the longbeam 16 at Morriscastle comp from local tackle shop (which had initially sold me the longbeam). I went down on Thursday and demanded my money back (50%) deposit as it still hadnt arrived. Retail price in shops over here not far off 400 euro. Cost via Mullarkeys, 163 stg inc P&P, around 240 euro. Delivery guaranteed within 5 days. Tackle shop kept blaming their suppliers.....Balls, suppliers only treat their customers like that if they think they can get away with it. Said tackle shop should have made sure, after I was sold a crap rod that I was looked after. They didnt bother their arse. Said tackle shop have now lost a damn good customer.

To my knowledge Shakespeare only sell direct, they dont sell through wholesalers. I would guess either Skakespeare are out of stock (unlikely but possible) or the shop was waiting until they had an order big enough to have it delivered carriage paid.
At the prices your quoting they have lost a tidy amount in that one sale through being a bit to gready, add to that your lost future revenue thay must be mad.
i agree with pete...i would prefer to give my local shop the money but if i can get it cheaper, y not!! i buy the odd rod from them to make some sort of balance, i think its not really fair that tackle shops are loosing trade but what can ya do? my local dealer is a main stockist for conoflex,century,greys with daiwa penn,mustad,grauvell etc bein there too....i cant blame it on lack of selection cause theres loads, and the help and advice u can get is brilliant...so the only thing is the money!!

If i went into any of the tackle shops in galway and said any of these words "Century" "Anyfish Anywhere" "Conoflex" or "Zziplex" They wouldnt even know what i was on about! it really sucks. Ajd crow can back me up on this.
i was up in galway in a tackle shop on the main street one day, asking for advice on a spot cause i was up there workin...got little to no help and bought a bit of line and hooks, no rods to speak of if i can rem correctly..and on the way back to the van i seen a joke shop near by and i went in and got some fart gas, needless to say my work buds didnt sleep soundly at all!!!
yeah, i know the one you are on about. they are very nice people(i live in there basically ) but the thing is they just wont admit to a customer that they don't know anything about sea fishing. they just sprout b**l s**t and new people to the sport just lap it up. it makes my blood boil
