crafty bass trick

while fishing a bass hotspot one crafty angler walked out at low tide and buired a lead and trace in the sand baited with lug leaving just the snoods and baited hooks above the sand then attached his main line and walked back up the beach to the high water mark and left the line just on the sand on this mark the spool on his reel was all but empty, then set about getting his other rod set up and diggin a few more lug
30 minutes later the tide was in full flood and his rig was in a foot of water 10 minutes later it had a nice bass on it in about 18 inches of water
now the two advantages of this method where 1 as the tide came in so did a load of cabbage weed, wieght and rig buiried they dont catch weed
2 the lug was in perfect condition and tight to the sea bed
the only disadvantage was that sometimes the flatfish will get it fist as they can start to feed when the water is only 9 or 10inches deep and due to the rig being under the sand an inch or two the bites may not register and you can end up sitting waiting for a bite when all your hooks already have fish on them ,still an interesting method for shallow beaches and estuary fishing( dont knock it unless u try it is my motto)

This assumes you have a decent tide to speak of. If I buried a rig at low water around here, I could probably still spit on it at high water

Good point Roger,

Got my first Bass of last year in about 18 inches of water in NO surf at all. They secret here is stealth..... I cast 10 yards into the water from 80 yards back.... Tightened into the grip and started to bait my other rod. Done the same for the second rod. As I was putting the second rod on the rest the first bucked over and I got a nice bass of about 50cm. I would have scared the bass off had I gotten closer to the waters edge. Learned my lesson big time that day.

Heard of that before burying the trace!..also i heard that if cut up some makeral bury and spread it around the bait that flatties go mad for it..suppose its groundbaiting in a way, doubt it you could use it on a mark with a big strong under current, still a good idea though im yet to try it!

another nice little trick is to dig half a dozen 10 inch holes around the area you want to fish, fill them with old mackerel etc. and then back fill them with sand. As the tide pushes over the beach all the scent leeches out of the sand hopefully attracting a few fish

- fish cannot come in and just mop up the groundbait, in theory there should be just loads of scent in the water so it should attract fish for longer

- with any kind of current the groundbait may get washed away down the beach, now just the scent from the buried groundbait is being washed downtide and drawing the fish up to the original site

as ever i think the fish need to be there

i know after the 15mins or so a lot of the juices are gone out of the baits - but i would try and lob the lot back in on an incoming tide - im always surprised at the amount of strip etc. that is still lolling around in the surf infront of you after hours of fishing

suppose at least the place isint infested with crab
