Fished here last monday night (19th) and had a few coalies at high tide. i was fishing at the end of the straight road that runs along the channel, just before you veer left and go uphill towards the hotel. There is a small slipway there.Went back next day at low water to see if i had been fishing baits in the channel and look for any features. The whole area looked like it had been covered in snow overnight but as i arrived i realised it was covered in fish, (mullet) scales.
The channel had been netted overnight and a massive amount of mullet had been scooped by the look of it. A few bass and sea trout?
Anyway i was only down for a break but maybe some of the lads who live there might keep an eye out and maybe see something or who is at it. i tried to pass this on to the authorities yesterday, without success, and will try again today.

Not great to hear...was driving down along there on Sunday and didn't see a thing. Must keep the eyes open over the coming weeks

didnt know you could fish that channel, we go on holidays to clonakilty every year and i spin off the beach and into the estuary at the end of the beach beyond the hotel with great sucess,sickening to hear of as****s neting it. . . . ..

Gearoid, i was just returning to apartment and saw a guy fishing there.. did the usual and had a chat. Seems it throws up flounder and bass but all i got was coalies. 5 in about an hour and a half(three were 1lb - 11/2 lb) Just lobbed out a running ledger with a 2oz ball weight and let it roam a bit. Crab was the bait.. no takes on sandeel.

souns good will try it this summer when im down again, its a fairly narrow channel isnt it? were you fishing it at the point where it takes a sharp turn away from the road?

thats a fairly well known spot for mullet spawning at this time of the year, have seen it at times where you could have walked across their backs. the scales get dislodged when the become quite agressive while breeding. still wouldnt rule out netting tho, unfortunately it wouldnt be the first occasion this has happened

Gearoid, thats the spot.

Lumpy, right up the slip and well onto the grass was covered in white. If that was breeding i want to come back as a mullet!
Seriously though, when i first arrived you could see massive shoals there, and up a bit maybe 200yds towards clon, where there is two buoys. they were clearly visible even driving along in the car. Only small schools of fish were present later in the week. There was also one dead mullet lying on the foreshore about 50 yds down from the slip.
Anyway it might be worth keeping an eye out if the channel looks full of fish.

thats sad, it probably was netting alrite, will have to keep my eyes peeled. happens more often than people would think down here, guards and fisheries know its taking place but seem to turn their noses up at it..

sad to hear alright , i was down there for a week last july in the apartments right on the beach . i also noticed alot of disturbance in the water one late evening but had a hunch that they were bass and i was right ! went down with spinning rod in hand and landed 5 bass within the last 20 8) minutes of daylight . best 20 minutes iv ever had !!!!!! 8)

what use are mullet to anyone ive heard the are not nice to eat? maybe some chipper flogging them as cod .. . .

It's only really the Irish that won't bother with a lot of fish, other nations eat a lot of them.....I've heard Irish guys sayin you can't eat pollock... to that I'd day "watch me".
