cunnigar, dungarvan bay

#1 Post by paulocallaghan »

hi

can anyone tell me the best places to fish on the cunnigar. Can you drive all the way out to the head of it or do you have to face the daunting walk. Are there better or at least good marks along its length or whats the story with it. as for baits i assume its lug and peeler as par for the course.

any help will be of great assistance

Lug seem to be the bait of Choice Paul. I have seen quite a few crab under my feet when walking here in Calm weather, so peeler might do the business as well. Cortaz, fishes this place a bit during the summer and I'm sure he'll post here when he see this thread. You can drive down the split quite a bit in a car. If you want to get all the way to the end you will need a 4x4. Cross over the river and head along the track. You want to park opposite to the wooden stakes. Then as the tide is rising, you will be walking all the way out to the cages. Start fishing and work your way back with the tide. You will be fishing with water all around (sometimes 300 yards behind you, so wear a live jacket if you are not familiar with the place or if you are fishing it by yourself.

As a rule of thumb wade knee high and have a few casts....when the water is at your thighs, just before your nads start walking backwards until it's knee high again......keep repeating this process. The last couple of hundred yards is the most arkward as there is some gullies and you need to cross these earlier.... Even leaving when the water is thigh high, you will be chest high when crossing these gullies, so be careful. It also helps to note these gullies as the Bass patrol them.....

I'm sure Cortaz will fill you in on anything I've missed.

Tight lines,

Kev

hi paul
never heard of the place  :)

april/mid. october/ may/aug best months.
lugs,lugs and more lugs
HIGH WATER MARKS.
HOTSPOT. to the right of the car park round the bend about 200 meter theres a rocky patch/ good spot for big fish before and after h.w. kiltys/bullets or peeler
to the left from the stakes down to the point is good for spinnin/bait. around h.w.
HOTSPOT;; theres a weedbed half way between the sand castle and the point running for 200 meter bait/or spin with flyin Cs. 2 hrs. eather side of h.w. ( have had over 50 here lots of times) its also the best bream mark i know.

other baits i seen bass cought there on; shrimp/rag/crab/mack.
spinnin; flyin Cs. size 2 or 3 red/ copper/silver/gold
most types of tobys, seems the smaller the better.
had a good few last yr. about 70/80 from 3/7.5lb.. on bass bullets skidded ocross the surface the middle sized one worked best. very good in shallow/weedy water
the above is about 10% of the fishing available ie. low water, the inside, the muddy gullys, the first bar,the cortaz method, the channels, the oyster beds, the spit bank, the abbey, poulapuka, under the collage the gullys, and my favorite spot "the end of the world" :? ect.ect.
is that enough??
well done on the 2 speicmens 8) 8) 8)

cortaz wrote:,under the collage

Do you mean under the Gael Scoil /Ring College?

I was there for 2 summers (fado, fado) , and we often ended up on the shore when we bunked the Rosary after dinner. I remember the place was alive with fish all right.
