Whiting Bay 1st Bass 07

#1 Post by Ferg »

People: Me and a mate

Duration: 6-10

Tide: hw 7

Weather: Cold

Bait: Fresh lug, razor and some frozen Lug

Rigs: 2hook clipped,2 hook flapper

Results: 2 bass, codling,6 coalies, flounder and whiting

Catch and Release:: Yes/No Bass for tea tomorrow

Report:Having being fishing Youghal for cod and not been on the beaches to much. Heard of a few bass being got around and of course CORTAZ giving everbody lessons. Decided to head for whiting bay as the wind seemed right for a nice surf.
Looked nice as we arrived but the wind must have turned as the surf died. First cast we both nearly lost our rigs there was that much weed about.
Headed to a different part of the beach Not expecting to much. 2nd cast the flounder around high water. a few small coalies after that. Got a nice rattle on the rod and sure it was a bass it was the codling about a pound.
Another rattle and a coalie about a pound again. Could see something at the rod then it went slack reeled in thought it might be a codling no a nice Bass around 3lbs. my mate got one a few minutes later about the same size. I got mine on frozen lug my mate got his on fresh lug tipped with razor. Nothing much after this a few more coalies and whiting

Am fishing Whiting Bay 45 years. Never produces numbers of fish but the quality is always good. Like everywhere else it got a name locally and the nets ruined it. My father caught a 28lb skate there around 1970 and his friend one of 40lb. As a young fella and not able to cast the distance I used to get a lot of plaice and flounder.
