Fishing from a pier
Hey Guys,
When fishing from a pier do ye use tripods?
Pier I'm gonna fish has a railing around the seaward side - do you rest ur rod against it loose or is there a "cheap but cheerful" method of securing it?
You know - something that wont cost too much (savin for a new rod  )

just pop into your local diy store pick up yourself a lenght of copper pipe laggin approx 8ft. get a pack of cable ties cut lagging into 9in sections hold in place with cable ties. leave there for the next angler and hopefully it will be there for your next trip. should only cost roughley around 4 euro for about a dozen of these foam rests.

My pier has holes in the ground where the old rail used to be and also holes in the end of the existing rails, dead handy. So no - no tripod on my local piers.
But I do sometimes use my camera tripod when going to other piers. Does the job and didn't cost a cent extra, already had it ...

I use the rod bags wrapped around the rail as a cushion and two strips of velcro (bought in a dress shop) that I strap the rods to my car roof as a strap if I feel it is needed....It works for me but don't use my method as an excuse not to buy new fishing gear

John, If I was fishing from a rail I wouldn't use a tripod, as long as you have a cushion to protect the rod and at times, like when the tide is pulling hard or there is a lot of weed about, then strap the rod down.
IMHO Tripods don't take to fishing on a high quay side that is more often than not concrete or stone, the legs don't get enough grip and unlike a beach once the rod goes in the water its gone for ever....not worth the risk in my book....there will be some exceptions to this advice, you have to decide on some things as you see them at the time.

Hello to everyone Ive just recently registered to this forum. This stuff might be suitable for a quick and simple way for securing rods to pier railings. Its called "soft - tie" a multi purpose rubber coated flexible wire for plant support.Available in garden centres and costs about 9 euro for 5m.Put 5 or 6 turns of the wire around the railing to protect your rod, rest rod on the wire and with two twists of the wire around the rod fasten it in place.iIts also usefull for holding rods and rests together when moving from place to place, just wind a few turns around your gear and twist to secure.
