this time of year...
well we are in spring now and it's that time of year again with the slowest 2 months of the fishing calender upon us. break out the size 6's! is it just me or does the lack of decent fish do funny things to the mind? by this i mean that i am less likely to go fishing, it's less rewarding. the sun has not yet established itself and baitbeds are frozen and lifeless. bait collecting becomes a major chore. but i still want to go fishing! take something away from me and i want it more! the mind wanders on all things fishy. new types of rigs drift around the brain whilst brousing through angling catalogues at the 'hot' stuff for the new season. the long nights are passed reading the old fishing books and laughing with endearment at the old tackle- 'my grandad had one of those'! u might even fix a rod ring or two or learn a new knot. the urge to go fishing fills the head with idealistic daydreams of the year gone bye. we forget how cold the wind was, how long we waited for a bite or that we didn't have the beach to ourselves - it was summer! we caught fish! pulling in six mackeral from a glassy summer sea, spending hours on a rock trying to hook quick biting wrasse at your feet or hearing the ratchet scream as a good fish steams off with your crab bait towards the setting sun, are all but memories from a past life. a good life  here's to the summer!!
