One thing to bear in mind with the SL20/30s is that with a lot of work the bearings often need replacing. You'll hear it when they go! They cost about £7. Usually have mine a full service once a year and rinsed off under the tap after use. Occassional drop of oil on the bearings every now and then.

The only other problem I've had is the brass pinion bent at the end and was replaced after a tough hauling for one of the 30s. That said I've a pair of both and my 20s are my most used reels. Very versatile.

My SL30 is still screaming and I can't cast over 30 yards or removed the spool. I gave my 525s alot more abuse and there still fine.

Got the Original SL30, and to echo the comments on this thread, its a winching machine, Perfect for Rough ground or light Boat work.

i have a sl30. its a nice reel. very powerfull use it for shore conger ect.. never fails!

Hi croppyboy,

Neither to be honest, the sl20 if fishing over rough ground onto clean sand where the fast retrieve would help to keep your gear clear of the snags but for clean beaches - a general multiplier would suffice. Penn 525, Daiwa 7HT or 7HT Turbo, Abu Mag elite/Sportsmag/Rocket( all in 6500 size ).

Of the reels listed above, only the Penn is really capable of handling a bit of rough ground fishing due to its bombproof build.
