Does anyone use sunken float rigs?

In theory, if you were to get a cork and thread it onto the top of your rig somehow, the cork would float up and lift the trace free of crabs & snags. I know you can use floating beads, but I haven't had any success in using them - just kiss them goodbye when the rig gets tangled in the snags.

Just wondered if anyone else had used this method.

Instead of using costly floating beads, get your hands on some foam filling (as used to protect items in cardboard box's), cut them into small blocks and thread them onto the hook before the bait. Because of the soft nature of the foam they won't damage the point of the hook and their great floating properties means that they keep the bait off the ground.

Kinda thinking of ear-plugs, which I have a plentiful supply of at work, for snoods, but I was thinking here of the whole rig. If I had a 6oz sinker, rig body of a two hook flapper with a cork at the top. If there was a reasonable tide flow, I was thinking the cork would lift the whole rig more vertically giving a good bait presentation. Then again, maybe I'm just working too many hours and there is no way this would have any effect on the feeding fish?

If you are float fishing, the rig is hanging below the float, but if you put enough weight on, the rig would sink but still be vertical??

You could manage that, but the rig itself would have to be critically balanced. By that, I mean offsetting the weight of the lead with the float to such a degree that when in water, the whole rig becomes weightless. Then you would need to add a very small amount of weight more to the rig, and it would sink until that small amount of weight comes into contact with the bottom.

To be honest, it seems too much like hard work to make a rig such as this for use in sea fishing, as I believe that the tidal movement would negate the use of such a rig.
