flatten plain leads with a hammer. this causes them to rise to the surface on retrieve. simple and effective. u can also make lead lifts from the thick plastic from shampoo bottles/ shower gels/ etc. cut a diamond shape roughly 2" wide and 3" long. make a hole 1 inch from the top of the diamond shape and 1cm from the bottom (keep them centred). thread onto the line above the lead and use telephone wire (or bead and crimp/ stop knot) to keep in place. u can make loads of these up in a jiffy. cheers.

have a look at veals website. look at the 'John Roberts Lead Lifters'. should be under 'terminal tackle'. you are more or less copying these, just using the plastic from the side of shampoo bottles. lenght should be 3" with a width of 2". if you are still stuck give me a shout.

When you retrive your rig the lifter acts as a plane and helps the rig rise to the surface clear of the snags. It then just skips on the surface and away from the bottom.

I've been fishing with Mark when he was using them and he was able to retrieve more tackle than I was fishing the same zone. Try it you'll like it..........

yes, but IDPearl also caught a doggy that morning and i didn't!

what IDPearl said is correct. they slide onto your line. fish them just above the lead link. fix them on the line with a bead and crimp/ telephone wire. they really do work a treat and make fishing rough/mixed ground easier. they are also handy fishing off rocks/piers onto clean ground. bright coloured ones may even attract fish.

you can run some 16/ 18 gauze wire through them. making a loop in each end you can add a lead link to the bottom. you can cimply clip them onto the end of any rig you choose. a neater job too in comparison to just threading them onto your line.

I explained this to a guy here at work. He is a bit "arty crafty" if you know what I mean. He asked me how do you guarantee that the device stays horizontal, acting as a plane, rather than vertical, acting as a rudder? Thinking about it I can see how it would plane on the surface but I am stumped when it comes to under the water :? .

if the holes made to pass the line through are badly centred, or maybe the cut-out from the plastic wasn't symmetrical, then i am sure it would act as a rudder, moving to the left or right depending. i haven't had this problem with them before. i honestly wouldn't mind too much if it did move a little, but so far they've been fine. i do see your piont though.

Great idea m.b3 but what is the best way to make the holes

straighten out a paperclip and heat over a candle. passes easily through the plastic. i then use the tip of a biro to if i need to enlarge the hole a little so as to pass the line through. job done. if you can think of a better way, then maybe you could tell me?!
