whiting??
what size hook/bait do people use for whiting.dont really get the chance to fish for them that often off the shore down this way, but there seems to be a few of them going in one of our marks at the mo so would like ta get a few.only really have targeted them before when sharking, we get millions of them off shore., just fished 1/0 pats and mak strips. i'm guessing thats a bit big for shore whiting. as for baits i was thinking lug/black lug and squid/mack cocktails..
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

For pleasure fishing I'll use a 1/0, stops some of the smaller fish gut hooking themselves. I've found straight mackerel outfishes sandeel or lugworm but then again each area will be different.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.

Much the same as above either size 1 or 1/0 Kamasans. Even go up to 30lb amnesia snoods as the teeth and spinning can wreck the snoods.
Sometimes find just tipping with little chunks of sandeel is better than whole eel. Squid strip's another good tipping bait.
If there are better quality fish about bigger hooks will still take them. Been getting some whiting in excess of 41cm to cod baits round our way lately.

I use 2/0 to 3/0. Using 3/0 minimizes catching the tiddlers!! Baits, squid and mussel, mackerel & lug, lug & squid, even whiting itself for bait, squid & mussel seem to take the best fish. Thats here in south west donegal, Im sure in varies up and down the coast.....
