Any sign of the speciman book for 2006 or is it a bit early for it?

The revision regarding acceptance of photos in lieu of actual bodies is extremely welcome and is to be wholeheartedly endorsed in my view.
From my own view mullet are my main specimen target and both that and the new mullet prize really have me looking forward to the new year!
As an aside, due to unforseen stupidity on my part I left it too late to put in a claim for a mullet I have in the freezer. Does anyone know what my options are?

Article in today's Irish Times (Wednesday 3rd January 2007)

Study looks at fish scales to identify species

Fish scales may soon be used to identify species such as roach, rudd and their hybrids through genetic fingerprinting in a pilot study due to begin this year in conjunction with the zoology department at University College Dublin, according to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee's (ISFC) report for 2006.

Up until now the body of the fish was required for ratification from a host of closely-related species.

"This is a very exciting development, and if successful the technique may be adopted across all Irish freshwater and marine species," says ISFC chairman Trevor Champ. "However, until the project is refined we must rely on existing rules."

He also reiterated his call for vigilance regarding "irresponsible people" who attempt to import live non-native species into Ireland, and thanked the officers at Holyhead who intercepted live fish during the year.

In this regard, the Central Fisheries Board (CFB) and National Parks and Wildlife Service have published a calendar on alien species for 2007.

I'm no expert on the rules but i think you have 1 year from date of capture to submit a claim .

Yeah I thought that was roughly the case. Each year theres always a couple of claims relating to the previous calendar 12 months.

In relation to the article, I have a good friend working on this area with particular attention on smoothound and another contact working closely on gilthead bream. Some of the implications of the findings could be really interesting for the sport in general

Blaker - yes, you can still submit that claim for next years list.

I had a mullet rejected this year on photographic evidence but the committee did offer advice as to how they wanted the pictures presented in future.

The species authentication routine is done from a purely scientifc viewpoint but the committee are definately listening to anglers requests to accept photographs and remove the requirement to authenticate the dead body.

At the end of the day, if no requests are submitted, the list does not exist so anglers actions have and will force the issue.

Blaker - I had a shot of the fish which I enlarged to show the diameter of the eye but it did not show the papillae on the lips clearly enough. I also had an undershot of the head showing the gill plates but again, it was not clear enough. I took both shots quickly and they were admittedly slightly out of focus. The picture was enough to convince me as an angler i.e. I know the different features to look for between the thick, thin and golden greys. Also as I explained to the committee, I would have been delighted to claim a new record thin lipped or golden grey instead of a thick-lipped.
However, they deemed the evidence inconclusive which is their perogative. A close up of the eyes and lips, the underneath shot of the gill plates and the position of the two dorsals ( all in focus ! ) should suffice in future.

Thirty - the book is printed. Some copies were left in tackle shops. It will be available on-line shortly. Otherwise it is available from the Central Fisheries Board office in Swords.

Boggy Mullet Chowder

3-1/2 pounds skinned and boned mullet fillets

1/2 cup chopped salt pork

2 medium onions, chopped

1 cup celery stalks and leaves, diced

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 small green pepper, chopped

1 large can of tomatoes

1 can tomato paste (large or small, you decide)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon liquid hot pepper sauce

2 teaspoons black pepper

1 tablespoon salt

9 white potatoes cut into chunks

3 large carrots, sliced

Cut mullet fillets into chunks. In a large Dutch oven, fry salt pork until light brown. Add onions and cook until done. Add celery, garlic and green pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, pepper and salt. Cook 10 minutes. Add 1 pint boiling water, potatoes and carrots. Cook until potatoes are nearly done. Add mullet chunks and simmer until the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Makes 6 generous servings.
