Prawns for bait

#1 Post by wilson »

Anybody here ever use them live! or in dead bait form. Do u think they'd be good for bass or what type of fish do u think they'd attract. I know there a firm favourite with the salmon anglers who also dye them just wondered if anybody uses them in the sea

Caught some killer pollack on them (dead, floated prawns) at St Johns Point, Donegal maybe 5/6 years ago now. Also caught literally hundreds of coalies using them legered off Bunagee Pier at Culdaff.

had wrasse to 5lbs plus on them. and used them in conjunction with crab for wrasse also. use them in my wrasse groundbait mix and have seen some good late summer ray on them.

never had anything else on them but wrasse and the odd pollock

I bought a box of frozen black Tiger prawns in a chinese foodstore today while I was getting a few boxes of squid. €12 for a box of 80. I have never used them before but always said I must give them a go. Last winter there were a few articles in the sea angling magazines about them. I'll be having a few scessions over the christmas so I will report back.

A friend of mine, who was originally exclusively a fresh water man, uses exactly the same rig used for salmon fishing with prawn when we go for bass. He has had great success. Has had 85 fish this season.

Fished a few hrs off a mark in the shannon estuary christmas night with them and had a few dabs, whiting and rockling. This mark is full off crabs, but they did not seem to have much interest in the black tiger shrimp. Very similar scent off them as peeler crab. This might be the reason why.

I,m fishing another mark in the estuary tonight and will use them. Let u know how I get on.

He mounts the prawn on a wire rig with trebles (similar to the internal construction of a plug) and suspends this about three feet below a float.
