Old Rod.

#1 Post by jack01986 »

I found an old Abu rod in my granny's house and through the power of the internet i was able to find the catalogue it was in and it was made in 1968 :D . The only problem is there are no rings on it and was wondering if there was any point in putting rings back on. What rings would you use
its not a sea rod but was just wondering.

Just be careful - it's likely to be brittle and break easily. I had a couple of old glass rods like this and the years aren't kind to them.

Maybe if you contact Abu, they might be able to help you out. it'd be a shame to put modern, garish rings on it and ruin the look of the rod. i'd put money the rings were the old plain metal ones. do you have any idea what the original colour whipping thread was? could be a cool little project to tip away at over the winter months.

Yes the whippings are still on the rod they are black. The reel seat doesnt have too much wear and tear on it there is black paint covering it and there are only a few scratches. I think its in fairly good nick, my uncle was from denmark and i think he got it over there. would be nice to do it properly.

hi jack, I have two old Abu glass rods: an 8ft 423 spinning rod and a 434 11ft bass rod. Both were purchased in the late seventies and both are still going strong.

Jack, as a word of encouragement i have two old Abu rods that i am still using. An ABU Atlantic 423 8ft spinning rod and an Atlantic 434 11ft bass rod; both of which date to 1980. I've had them re- ringed a couple of times and despite having many other rods i still love fishing with them, (especially the 434. )

I sent abu garcia emails wondering what type of rings should be used etc. will let you know what they say if anything. I dont think i will sell it i might try restore it and use it. It is a nice rod just to hold not too heavy even though the reel seat is metal.
