Please Help me catch some Fish

Hey,

Looking for some help please. Sea fishing for about 3 months now. Started off well but now things are getting pretty dismal! Last handful of sessions(mainly night) have produced nothing! Sometimes if lucky some VERY small whiting.

I am based in dublin and don't mind traveling for over an hour to a spot that will produce fish. I am going to leave my house at approx 5am Friday week and want to go somewhere for a days fishing. By fishing I mean catching!

So anyone know any dynamite spots in dublin or within an hour or two of dublin?

I'll probably be fishing a bass rig or paternoster. Thats all I'm able to set up really.

Any help appreciated!!!

Hey I've fished Howth mostly.

Find it extremely snaggy though. Take ages setting up a rig then loose it on first cast!

I've been using squid and mackeral as baits.

get yourself some rag and lug tip them with mac or squid most things out there will take these.

But best stop fishing this snag mark yes may hold a bigger fish but no fun re tying traces every cast this will realy get you down.

Do what your doing get local advice and go there i am in belfast so no help on that point.

Just keep trying i went 12 trips without a fish this year and it peed me off bad but its like that some times just keep going.

Ken as Pookie says get some rag or lug and tip them with squid or mack.You should try Wicklow for cod or even coalies,Greystones or Kilcoole should produce plenty of coalies with the odd cod,why don't you go to that meet in Greystones on the 28th,I'll be there early morning.

Rag and Lug eh! To be honest never used either! Maybe thats the problem! Paternoster rig with size 2/0 or 3/0 do the job?

Would love to catch a cod!!!

Might try wiclow and greystones

Nothing wrong with mackerel expect to get some dogs on it. Almost any fish will take it at some time or other. I agree with the rag and lug but you can always use your squid in thin strips to tip these. If you are on the south side of Dublin then Arklow is well within reach, if you blank there I will be surprised. It holds lots of small fish and plenty of dogs if thats what you want and you can scale down your tackle as necessary.
I feel this is mainly a night venue but to be honest I do very little in daylight hours anyway.

Hi Ken,

in order to cut down on the tackle loss, try fishing a clean beach and scale your tackle down a bit.

Size 1 hooks are sufficient to cover beaches, at this time of year, you can catch flounder, dab and coalies.

Mackeral, squid and sand-eel are good baits for beaches but rag or lug will give you an advantage.

Try this link for some rig ideas - http://www.gemini-tackle.co.uk/rigs.html these rigs can be bought in your local tackle shop or you can build them yourself. I would recommend that you buy a couple first and study how they are made, then think about making your own.

hi ken,
theres a few of us fish the back of pier at howth .i think its the east pier.we have caught codling,coalies pouting nearly all the fish came on lug ,crab and squid.you do lose lots of rigs but its worth it.

Rag are no good at this time of year ,think they spawn, there a different colour and dont stay on the hook that well. We've been fishing Killiney beach and Shankill the last few weeks and both venues have produced, Killiney for Bass and Shankill for codling up to 5or6 pound, both not too far from you, Waterford is a bit further but supposed to be getting bags of cod

One more question. Cod are bottom feeders correct? Does this mean that my bait has to be lying on sea bed? Or can it be just off it?

Do I use one of those bombs with the arms on it or a normal bomb?

What hook size is best, 2/0?
