Cheers Lads,

Must pop out to viking and pick one up!

I suppose anything would really do the job johnathon but the Ian Gold's measure is just the job for getting the exact measure. Seaniebo & Coaster had them at the Kilmuckridge comp and they are the business, nose to the end plate and where the tail finishes - just round up to the next centimetre.

nearly all the comps I've fished have always rounded up..

(so that's how you win all the comps, you round everyone else's down   )

I have always and have always seen rounding down...... Maybe different clubs have different rules but whats the story as far as IFSA comps are concerned? Can someone clarify?

just checked through the diary.. no mention of rounding.. i think its up to the discretion of the club holding the competition..

Say if for example you had a fish of 35cm and maybe 1 or 2mm you would round it up to 36cm? Not disputing you lads either BTW, if those are your rules then thats fair enough, I know in SAI we round down and in any other comp I ever fished we have rounded down.

Oh, is there by any chance a folding version of the larger Ian Golds Match measure? I have seen the really long ones but they will never fit in a tackle box.

To Round up or Down.....

#9 Post by petekd »

Does anybody know the official line on measuring fish?

IE When measuring a fish should we be rounding up or down.

Granted different clubs may have different rules but is there an official line on this for IFSA comps/opens etc?

from what i have been told the folding sticks are not as accurate..

(suggestion: put up a poll to see who round up or down when measuring fish in a competition)

I think that you would do both, if it was 36cm and 3mm then i would say that it was 36cm! But if it was 36.7cm i would say it is 37,
Just the way i would do it, seems to make sense(to me anyway)

Nah, the measuring sticks arent ruled down to mm, that would leave a grey area as such AL, open to abuse.

the reasoning i was told to measure up was that "if the tail passes the line you count from the next visible line"..

fishing an open shore comp beside someone from the club that organised the comp told me to round all catches up..

the reasoning was ..

"if the tail passes the line you count from the next visible line"..

forgot to say, we decided in ulster to go using the ian golds measures as standard, ie everyone was told to buy them! so as everyone is the same.
i have the 1 metre ones as well in the club, they fit inside the rod holdall no problem so easy enough to carry

NFSA rules state that you round down to nearest cm ...

Its interesting we are even having a debate on this TBH, its something I would have thought would have been standardised long ago.... If it is the case you round up then I demand a recount on my Munster Open scorecard........ :D !

Naturally the IFSA don't have anything useful like this on their website, even when you find a web browser that the website actually works in.

Rant over ... but IFSA must have guidelines on this ...

i've done a bit of searching and it seems to come down to the discretion of the club holding the competition..

cant find anything stating whether to round up or down anywhere in any ifsa documentation.. but I'll keep digging..
