a friend of mine claims to have caught a conger of 56lb from ramore head about 15 years ago although it was sold to a chinese who had a buyer lurking round the comp venue! :(

ive nearly lost a rod at garron point when something went for a run hooked into it and it kept going, stopped then either got into its hole or snagged had to pull for a break

mate was getting a good bite, struck and thought he had hooked what we thought was a huge lump weed, so tightned the drag up and he was pumping it in for 5 mins or so. about 10yards from the edge, it took off with the shock leader on the reel and the 60lb leader snapped!!!

2 days later an old local guy came down saying theres been 2 or 3 over the 60lb mark caught and he personally had gaffed and released one close to 80lb a year ago for his mate.

theres big ones out there ok its just a matter of catching them!!!

I've seen Conger up to 30lb hooked at Ballycastle - but we couldn't land them.

Another Forum member had one close to 50lb on the surface but couldn't land it.....

according to my little book....
Shore.
40lb from Portrush harbour harbour
35lb from Blackhead lighthouse
Boat.
60lb at wreck of Drake off Rathlin
45lb Killybegs

other figures of interest were 7lb plaice from prom Portrush and 14lb Bass from Downhill

These figures are over 30 yrs old from 'Catch 'em while you can' ..sea fishing from the north irish coast. Larry Nixon
Good we book. It talks of a wealth of fish from the coast that makes it seem like a diferent place all together. Then again, im sure it was in them days.

My Dad had one over 40lb from a rock mark near Dunsevrick, in shallow water, used to be a good few spots round that area we would have fished for them until few local lads realised what we were getting so they started fishing for them and then left any congers they caught lying on the rocks or harbour instead of returning them !
Didn't go down well with the old man, he ended up telling them in no uncertain terms what would happen if it continued!

Heard of one in the old Harbour at Ballycastle before the new one was built, guys reckoned it was close to 100lb. Few either lost or had rods broken cause of it. Big female that knew how to get an easy fed in the harbour 8)

A diver told my dad some of the biggest conger he's ever seen were around the wrecks off Rathlin.
