Culdaff!!!

It was my day off from work yesterday and i decided to go to Culdaff and use what i had left of my rag worm. Had about 20 or 30 left from the Ballyliffen competition on sunday. Wasn't really expecting much but went down for a bit of craic! Fishing started well with a few flatties. As the tide got lower something totally unexpected happened, i landed a 2 and a half pound sea bass. Couldn't believe what i was seeing! We fished on and i then caught a sea trout about a pound. Then the session got even better as it got dark with coalies, whiting and more flatties were caught. I caught 25 fish and my friend Paul had 5. We fished from 2pm until 7 and the only reaon we left was because we ran out of bait! What a session and what an experiance catching my first ever bass. If i can work out how to get the photos off my phone i'll post them up later.

Well done mate, any size/form of a bass in Donegal is some achievement.

I couldn't believe it! They say that Culdaff is better fished on an incoming tide but that was proved wrong yesterday! I've only been beach fishing a few months and thats got me hooked now! :D

I know...I dont recall ever having 25 fish off a sandy beach......!! Much less a sandy beach in Donegal :D

hi ronan, well done on the bass! i heard years back that the venue threw them up but hadnt heard of any in recent years.
ballyliffen didnt throw any up on sunday either which was surprising with it running into dark, although the fishing seemed to be tough for most with some flounder turbot and coalies appearing....
some venues in that area have produced bass in the last few weeks, though not of much size

I have fished here a lot and had many fish. heard all the rumors too but listened with a pinch of salt until last year when i got a good bite and a typical bass fight, :cry: bad luck struck and i lost the fish without getting a good look at it, but it wet my appetite and i gone back several times in hope. No luck so far but that's fishing, we live in hope. :wink: :wink:

Well done Ronan!,
I was the guy who you were chatting to when you and your mate were packing up.
Unfortunately i didn,t manage to catch a bass (I have never caught one) but the coalies were coming 2 at a time on every cast i lost count after 30 or so,(averaging between 1 and 2 lbs with the odd 3 ) also picked up 2 small flounders.

Species list 2006.
Pollack, coalfish, lsd, thornback ray, mackerel, tub gurnard, red gurnard, grey gurnard, dab, flounder, brill, turbot, conger, Plaice, Scad.

Hey Jonboy hows it going? It really was a great session that day! We r heading down next tuesday evening again if ur about we'll c ya down there. We are also going to the open shore this sunday on Benone beach. Hoping for another Bass :roll:
