Bait:Squid and frozen lug

Rigs:pulley and 2 hook flapper

Results:4 cod 4-6lb

Catch and Release:: yes and no (mate kept 6lb but it was deep hooked)



Report:Asked for help on the forum this morning and as usual got a good response(thanks lads ) tryed to get crab this morning but couldn't so my mate went up to one of the angling shops in the Cork region and was promptly ripped off for bait(story for another day my mate is new to fishing and didn't know any better, what a welcome ) i had squid and lug at home so i used this as well. Anyway decided to head for the Youghal area(wasn't sure where till we got there )reached the mark which was deserted except for a couple of dog walkers(advantages of shift work,you get to fish when everyone else is in work ).I set up with a pulley rig and lug tipped with squid, and the mate with a 2 hook flapper.
I fired my rig exactly where i wanted it to go and my mate miscast and fired it 20 yards out(you can see where this is going )less than 2 minutes later he's reeling in a 4 and half pound cod .Things went quiet after this and just as it got dark we moved about 100 yards down from where we were and straight into the last hour of fishing and with 20 minutes were in to a brace of cod (1 each thank god ) and just on the last cast i got another of about 4-5lb. have to admit it was nice to break my duck but it was better to see the buddy get totally hooked on our chosen sport OK it's not as spectacular as other reports as far as quantity of fish goes but for a couple of fellas still trying to get to grips with different types of sea angling we were quiet pleased. .....Sorry i know this report is a bit long winded

One other thing there were strong tides and alot of weed about but it was managable.And again thanks for the help earlier on

I'm glad your mate had a few good fish and you broke your duck.
Pity about the bait rip-off but we live and learn.
Always good to have another maniac out in the elements.

I would be more excited that you. Apart from last year it was at least 5 or 7 years since cod of that size showed up in the estuary. There is always the odd (very odd) decent fish, but its good to see that fish of that quality are showing up now. It bodes well for the run up to Christmas.

...to be honest i'm wondering if i should have posted a report on this session , it was a decent day out and i probably got to eager to report it(you can probably guess whats going to happen next, with boats in the area ...and if it does i appologise in advance )

Well I know what your saying, but if people don't report this site will lose a lot of its appeal. The boat guys know damn well when the cod or in or not. Just think of the damn time they spend at it. Very little goes on without them spotting it. Use them to your advantage if you see them working the estuary you can be damn sure the fish are in and its time to get the rods out.

Sounds like great fishing. I was out in the estuary ( and further) on Monday and Friday of the same week in the boat. Monday was a disaster with only 1 small whiting and on Friday we just caught a large amount of coalies in about 15 minutes. Then they disappeared. Not a cod was in sight. Looks like the shore was better.
By the way as regards distance I think it matters little how far you cast. On the Youghal side of the estuary the depth is fairly constant at about 18 feet for quite a long way out ( opposite the point). At the Ferrypoint side it is about 30 feet deep within about 25 yards.

Several years ago while fishing off one of the quays in Youghal I was getting nothing. In fact I had lost gear in ropes outside the harbour. I just dropped the bait about 10 feet off the quay and got fish non-stop.

Another myth is that crab is the only bait. Mussel can work very well and lug is good from the boat.

Hey all,

Anyone know how is Youghal fishing for Cod lately.(or anything else for that matter )

Last time out in that area we fished Ferrypoint but only managed some very small codling in between the dang coalies.

Was going to try up by the Abbey this weekend
