What do you think of herring as a bait? I used it once but blanked although it stays on the hook very well.

i was fishing wicklow harbour last night and say the lads pullin the herring nets. it got me thinking that if the herring are there it must be what the fish are feeding on or one of the things that they are feeding on. i didnt have any herring to fish with but the next time i go down im going try so maybe a full one belt it out and see what happens.

Those dam coalies  - absolutely everywhere down here

Every one of gets hooked halfway into their guts as they wolf the bait straight down
Have tried using huge baits but they will go for anthing regardless of size

- how do you deal with that ??

Dont want to kill em getting hooks etc back but how??

Very very interesting, what reports have you herad from kiliney in regards to the tope, one of my mates has caught plenty of them from the boats around kiliney and i heard that a few where caught off the back of the island in dalkey i think it really is only a matter of time before someone pulls one in off the beach, i think however your best bet would be to fish white rock for them, the place does be invested with whiting and id say the tope would be in feeding off them.

when you get on to kiliney took to your lrft pass the tea rooms and you will see a rocky out let behind that is a small cove called white rock preety good fishin there for flats in session two years ago my mate caught a bream there as well. theres always good feeding in the area beacuse around 20 or 30 yards out there is a sand bank loaded with sandeels, we used to pull them down there.

thats what i was thinking if all those small fish are there, and there does be more of them at night, then the tope and other preditor fish have to be in feeding on them
