525 Mag or 6500 abu
Okay,
Here it is ....
(been asked before but time is not on my side so apologies all round)
My sister in law is comin home from US for christmas and the missus has bowed to the pressure and "allowed" me to get her to buy me a new reel over there (way cheaper than here!!).
Question is what do I go for ?? :?
525MAG (think its gs) or Abu 6500 CT ??
Thanks and again apologies for dragging up this old chestnut again
john.

To sum it all up mate,
For a great, bullet proof, low maintenance all rounder of a reel thats fairly docile and easy to handle with a super retrieve rate and as at home on a beach as it is in roughish ground then you cant look further than the 525 mag.
For outright distance and with 3 methods of braking, the mag elite is a thoroughbred. Not for anything other than clean beaches though and they do require a bit more maintenance than the 525.
It depends what you want it for mate, they are both fantastic reels that will feature in absolutely everyones top 5 beach reel list.

525gsmag is a available uk only as the side plate is engineered in scotland. I've seen 525mags boxed as 525gsmags from the US. If its a 525mag your getting from the US its going to be the normal 525mag not the super so will be fast with 0.35mm line and bearings will have to be oiled with red rf befpre use.

The GS has no mags at all......wild as a coot!! dont go there, its a light boat reel.....in fact the 525Mag is a UK Penn reel...the yanks only just picked up on it....I dont think the Penn US version is even in the US shops yet.
Same goes for the MagElite.....the ones you see on offer in the US were meant for the European market.
John...if you want to get a good deal out of the US....go for an Avet, either the SX or an MX.....you will need to mag them yourself....but beleive me a kid can do it....metal washer...2 magnets and a little bit of 2 pack glue......takes all of 10 minute. A magged Avet will leave the Abu and 525 standing for quality and performance....and they are the best reel in the world for the price.

Hi Tom,
I've had two of my 525mags brought in from the US so they are sold over there. They are manufactured there and the supermag, mag extra and super mag extra have uk modified sideplates and/or bearings. The 525gs is a different reel that runs off centrifugal breaks but there is a Penn uk version thats magged that was being called the 525gsmag.

the 525mag GS is the chepest of the mag family with penn in 525 range....its identical to the 525 gs but with the added magnets in it, eg, has the black and silver end plates, not pure black like the 525mag.....also i think no gold spool in the 525gs mag
they used to be on veals site, but now are gone....possibly with the introduction of the new range of 525mag extra etc

Lumpy,
I got my magnets from a friend in the US, but I would imagine Penn or Abu...even Pete Coogan could supply them.
I used 2 small 5mm diameter X 2mm thick in both my Avets, you need to take the side plate off (only one comes off) take the spool out and glue a small steel washer at the bottom inside of the fixed side plate....put the magnets onto that....they will hold during any cast.....replace everything and that's it....more than enough room for the magnets....it just tames the reel to whats needed for surf casting.
Donagh,
Penn was bought out a while back, Penn (Europe) lease the franchise from them....when the new owners seen how many 525mags Penn UK were selling they got Mackellow over and told him to make a wish list.
The original 525gs Knobby and then 525Mag were financed (all of the tooling and new parts) by Penn UK to Mackellows designs. He told me that the US were going to take over the manufacturing and also retail the reels in the US....at the time he said that would come around sometime next year.....they may have put a kick in and got them into the shops sooner.
I hope this means the 515Mag will be out sooner too 8)

After this I will be searching for some info on the avet. Anyway my one point is not to be afraid of buying a supermag, I dont think they slow down the cast at all. you can set it up to suit yoursel and its a great comfort to be able to slow things down when the wind is smack in your face.

I have two 6500 mag elites, Penn 525 Mag, Daiwa 7HT Turbo with a magged conversion, SL20SH and 30SH and a 6500 Sports Mag. The favourite for fishing is still the 525 Mag - it's indestructible, controllable, fantastic retrieve, great gearing and good for the distance.
Having said that, I also do distance casting and have tuned the 6500 Mag Elites and the 7HT Turbo just for that. They are more delicate than the 525.
The Sport Mag is a bit of a disappointment compared to the 525 Mag as the retrieve is slower, the drag is weaker and the distance is not as good as the Mag Elite due to a plastic cog on the spool. I modified the gearing to make the retieve faster, but can't be bothered with modifiying to a speed bullet to make it faster. It's OK for fishing, but as I said, not as good as the 525 Mag IMHO.
