multiplier rod can you use a fixed spool reel

I know this is a well asked question on the forum.

I understand all the eye stuff about distance between them but will it harm rod being bent a different way than a multiplier would.

I have a multiplier rod i love casting and was going to fit a reel seat to take my surfmaster reel.

no problem it wont harm the rod it wont cast just as far as with a multi .
the problems occur when you put a multi on to a fixed spool rod.

I have heard that with the use of braid and with new fixed spool design you dont lose to much using a multiplier rod read it in total sea fishing.

I am not saying a multiplier does not out cast a fixed spool just that before it was affected more using a fixed on a multiplier rod if that makes sense.

Sorry guys but going with the common train of thought on this issue, the points above may not be entirely true.

The multiplier rods are rung differently from FS in two ways - A) Spacing between eyes and B) Diameter of eye closest to reel.

On a FS rod, the first eye (nearest the reel) is at least twice the diameter of the same eye on a multi rod. This is because of how the line comes of a FS reel compared to the Multi.

Line comes off the FS reel in a circular twisting action, the first eye therefore has to be larger to control the line movement so that it travels up the rod smoothly.

If you try to control this with a smaller eye (which is located closer to the reel) there is every change that the line will tangle and cause a snap-off.

I have used a multi on a FS rod with no problems but I don't think I would want to try it the other way round.

I might be wrong but other anglers may be able to add to this.

The size of the tip guide is not that important on fixed spool rods in itself, granted fixed spool rods will normally have bigger diameter tip guides, mostly governed by the larger stripper guide and the fact that they would normally form the cone by making the tip guide bigger. If the stripper was further away from the reel it could be smaller, this would be easier to form a cone with a smaller diameter tip.

The recovery of the tip would play a bigger part in any line violence between the tip guide and the stripper. As most FS rods are softer in the top half they may actually gain by having a smaller tip guide as long as the placement of the intermediate guides was right....look at the New Concept Fuji Low Riders. The placement of the stripper is more important then the size of the tip guide as far as cutting back on line violence.

Most if not all Tournament fixed spool rods would have a very stiff tip but years ago the guys would only use 3 intermediates and a tip...a lot has moved on since then.

IMHO to use a fixed spool on a multiplier rung rod is a lot more user friendly than the other way around, simply because of the number of guides being less on a fixed spool rod. Line touching blank....its not the end of the world when it happens but its not good to have the line touching the blank as you reel in. Line touching blank as you cast and load the rod may cause more harm though.

Thank you lads for all that once again forum members help me out.

In that case if anyone is looking a great rod at a well below and cheap price pm me. 12ft multiplier rod in great condition with blue shrink wrap and 2 sets of coaster and reducer. very strong and casts well even in my hands. Offers welcome not looking a lot for it just need to make space.

Or will swap for something you dont need.

fixed spool on a multiplier rod is fine for fishing purposes.....perhaps not so for all out casting....
