I'm thinking of getting one of these reel for christmas. Could it be used for an 'all-round' reel.

the slx20hv (slosh 20) would b a good all rounder but i would only use da 30 and 40 for da realy heavy stuff.

you have a 525 mag Steve and it wouldn't relay justify you buying a slosh mate to be honest i use the 525 mag for rough ground and have it loaded with 20lb line. depending on your fishing requirement's if you do beach fishing then you may want to look in to getting your self a beach reel people say that a 525 will do beach fishing witch it will but i like to use a different reel. you may want to look in to getting your self a 7ht a mag elite or a sports mag i have the elite my self now different people will have there own views if you like me do 50/50 fishing beach and rocks then a second mutliplyer would be a good idea. if you look at it this way it means that your better set up you can have the 525 with 20lb line and the elite/7ht/sports mag with 12-15lb line this will mean that you can cast further and hopefully get more fish

I agree with Merv on this.

I have a 525 Supermag with a spare spool. One loaded with 15lb and the other with 20lb. The 525 will cover both beach & rocks.

However, I am a bit of a tackle-tart and also have a SLO30SH loaded with 30lb for really rough ground and congers.

Depends what you are willing to spend but a 525 and a lighter reel such as 7HT or Abu Sports Mag/Mag Elite will keep you covered.

i hav an sl3o, an slx 30 and a 525 mag. for out and out rough ground i would always use the daiwas. mainly because the 525 doesnt hold enough 35lb mono but also and here i think is the important fact the gear ratio is higher on the daiwa's and the are with out a doubt a more powerful reel. i find the 525 perfect for mixed ground and lighter rough ground fishin.i have had the 525 struggle with heavy kelp type ground where as the daiwas excell in this kinda situation.

i bought a daiwa slosh30 last year. A bit heavy for distance casting but one of the best reels for heavy beach and light boat work. brilliant for congers and a fast retrieve. give it a go.

Mate i have one and great for heavy ground kelp but as a casting reel not great. as everyone says above the mag enough i only use my sl20sh for congor and heavy kelp but again the penn does the heavy stuff too.

Save your money buy another penn mag and put 30lb on it and then can use it as a second rod set up on the beach also.

But if realy want a slosh make it a 20 they are well made but have seen if you watch and wait them going for 30/40 on ebay.

ive been fishin for a good number of years and used to always use abu reels like the elite but some times i found that the retreive was a bit slow and if i was fishing over dirty ground id get stuck sometimes with a fish on. i recently bought a slosh 30 and its brilliant, not only am i hitting the same distances but the retreive is something else to. the other thing is that you know what ever fish you catch even a tope, you have the end takcle to get it in. the reel wont quit on you. but saying all this you do have to get used to it because its a monster of a reel. im left handed and i found it hard to grip the reel at the start. my tumb kept slipping but as the old saying goes practice makes perfect.

A major problem with using 30lb on a smaller mulfiplier such as the 525 is the intial retrieve will be alot slower due to the lower dameter of the spool due to the reduced line left on your reel. Every time you double the diameter of the spool you double the retrieve. This is also why larger line diameters slow down a multiplier as the line level reduces the spool rotation gives less line out. Another affect of this is as line level moves up and down on a star drag multiplier so the drag poundage changes.
