Hello fellow fishers. I just sighned up to read about fishing the coast of your lovely country. I will be in Kells for a few weeks next summer.

Here is the type of river fishing I am involved in at this time of the year.

We are targeting migratory Rainbow Trout.

Man the things we do to get out fishing ,,, alarm goes off at 2:30AM on the road by 3:30AM heading north to meet up with TS . After loading up TS's nice new SUV it was off to pickup GBfisher.

We arrive at our spot about a 1/2 hour before sun up so GBfisher was kind enough to talk to TS and I while we intently listened and waited for first light ;D

After a bit of a hike it was time to fish!!!! Unfortunately GB got his line in the water before me and I had to help him land 3 rainbows before my line even got wet . Son of a Beach,, 3 drifts 3 fish landed .

Shortly after that I managed to get into one .

I think we spent the next hour or so getting a few on but not landing any . I had one on that thought it was part of Barnam and Bailey's trapeez act ,,, 4 or 5 nice jumps .

Absolutely delicious!!


It was a great outing, and if I didn't get a get a good look at Nicks big leaper, I would have swore it was an east coast Atlantic! It wasn't just 5 jumps, it was 5 big jumps with fast runs between each one! I wish I had been closer to properly help the lad land it! ::) flip! it was played out and just about finished! A few dam logs near shore, and a fancy weave move by the monster, caused a unplanned released! A great and unforgettable battle though! ;D

Deer sign everywhere! We were jumping them as we hiked their trails while heading downstream. Didn't see them, but their tracks were only minutes old! Bucks, does and yearlings everywhere. Gb pointed out fresh scrapes in a few places! He has a good eye for sign!

I had a great day day with those two boys indeed. As you can see we started hitting them a day break, and our hike, while fishing different pools took us downstream till 3:30 pm! Thank goodness we only had to walk in the one direction. Even at that, the last climb up the big hill finished my legs off completely! Major cramps on the way home, but I wouldn't trade that day on the river for any amount of money!

We were walking along the Streetcar tracks, looking for the trail down to the Battenkill River, when I noticed a Possum running along after GB! At the same time I heard the streetcar coming, so we all moved off the tracks, but the Possum moved a little slower while calling out to GB "wait for me daddy, wait for me" Well, the possum didn't move as fast as daddy, Nick and me, and just when it got it's little head on the last rail, the streetcar went by! By By Possum!

Excellent post. Looks like you has some great fishing. Nice to see Wild Rainbows for a change. Interesting to see how the fish look very like sea trout as there is no sign of any pink on the flank or near the gills.

You'll enjoy Kells next year, some very nice fly fishing to be had and in summer time you should get some excellent caddis fishing in the evening.

Closer to Spring they get the color after being in the river for a few months. I also fish the hatchery bows that escape the pens in Lake Huron. They have the color and are different than the wild ones for sure.

wow,what a sight,perfectly formed rainbows,most of the bows here in the put n take fisheries are deformed in one way or another,you must get a great fight from them beauties,especialy on a light weight fly rod,maybe an AFTM5-6.regards ivan

i see you like to shoot also, our phesant season opened on 1/11,
here,s what happene.............
went to my local spot , chatted to the farmer for a while....
went down across 2 fields when a cop with a pump action and wearing an F.B.I. baseball hat comes running up to me, and demanded,,
who gave you premission to shoot in here?
i replyed,
who gave you premission.?
he then flashed his badge, and said that a cop is on duty 24 hrs. a day.
so, i said to him does that mean when your drinking, your drinking on duty,

he told me that they had formed a gun club released 50 phesants in
the area
he then told me that they had shot,trapped and poisoned what he called vermin,(foxes,magpies,hooded crows, ect.)
i then stated that yeah had whiped out the native wildlife to make way for a few phesants,
the farmer arrived on the seen,
i told him what had been said, and what this cop thought of the local wildlife.
the farmer wasent happy, and ran him, told him never to come on his land again,
he was well drunk off (the cop)
went on my way and got a few phesents after that,
we get sea trout up to 8lbs, how big do yeah get the r.bows some of them in the pics. look to be around 10lb.?

Great story Cortaz, I'm glad you fixed the copper up!

In the river I fish for the natural bows, they can be caught up to 20 pounds. My largest in that water is 16 pounds.

In Lake Huron, there was one caught last year that weighed 40 pounds. Here's a photo of a Lake Huron Bow. I don't know what this one weighed:

I was within hearing distance of the gun exercises at Borden! So close I ducked a few times! Yes, the Notty between Alliston and Angus. I've been fishing those pools for 48 years.
