Newbie needs help!

#1 Post by copeyhagen »

hi everyone.

i have been coarse fishing for a while now,

fishing for most species, but i have only ever been sea fishing once, fishing with feathers off of balscadden in the summer for mackeral!

i have an abundance of spinners and lures, most of which i have read would probably do well with both sea and coarse fish.

i havent got a clue about sea fishing really and im just looking for some useful experienced knowledge!

is spinning useful anywhere in howth?

cheers in advance

Do you any rods that can cast a bait and few ounces of lead? Doesn't have to go far at first (off pier/rocks). It might need to be able to fight though. If you catch something that gives you a good buzz invest in a beachcaster that throws up to 8 oz. and away you go.

PS. Less then 8 weeks to Christmas :D :D :D
All fishermen are liars except you and me and to tell you the truth, I'm not so sure about you!

first off cheers for the replies!

i have a good strong spinning rod
a ron thompson dialex spin..its a 10ft.

i have a telescopic rod, bought on the cheap in crete, its about 13 ft, and has a short butt. i dunno, maybe its a pier rod or something.
i have loads of other rods but their match rods i reckon the would be useless.

i have a bit of sea fishing terminal tackle i got from a friend. couple of heavy weights few spools of line(50 lb).. ect

i have a good few reels. i have a few fixed spool reels, one with 12 pound line and one with 10 pound line, another with 6 pd line ect..

i also have a few brand new multipliers

one is smallish. i was thinking of loading that with the 50 pd line,

i also have a large multiplier reel, brand new in box with depth counter on it. i aint gonna use it. was gonna try to flog it off in henrys shop in dublin.

do u guys collect ur own rag or do u buy it?

is the balscadden part of howth when you drive down past the piers, go up the hill and follow the road around to the old redbrick watchtower or whatever it is?

was crazy busy when i visited it with my brother in alw. i lost about 10 sets of feathers and weights due to snags though!

spinning can be good off the east pier from the elbow down to the lighthouse. you may be a bit late now though?

as regards tackle stick to the fixed spool for the mo if that's what you're used too. if you are using 10/ 12lb line put a shockleader on it unless you are floatfishing or lobbing with 1 or 2 oz leads. look at some of the rig diagrams on the web. make a simple 2hook paternoster- it will see you catch most fish. only when you feel you need something else start trying more complicated rigs.

50lb line on a small multiplier is madness! use the 50lb for making rig bodies and shockleader.

if you leger at howth around now fish evening ino darkness n u'll catch penty of whiting. there are better places if you're willing to travel a little.

the rods you have will be fine for the moment. you can specialize at a later stage.

My tip for any beginner is to get this book
"Sea Fishing Properly Explained", it's part of the 'Right Way' series of books, they have a very good website - http://www.right-way.co.uk if you can't find it in a shop.

It'll give you info on species, gear, setups, rigs etc. All very easy to put in to practice

Well worth the massive outlay of about E5.00 plus postage!!!

That book sea fishing properly explained is REALLY good and not expensive, dont get mixed up in all the marketing hype you dond need the latest rod and reel the fish are hardly gona go i prefer that rod over there with his worm etc. lol anything will do, just chuck it out and enjoy the way the conservations are talking theres nothing out there anyway so you,ll just be posing on the beach with youre designer rod catching nothing.
