A Waterford Beach Sun 29/10/06

#1 Post by drseafish »

People: 5 In all. I had arranged this night a couple of weeks back with some pals from work. Ever so often myself and Joe (and some of his buddies) bring a group out and introduce them to a little fishing and see if we can hook a few more to the sport. Initially about 10 were supposed to come, but over the weekend it whittled down to 5. I had Joe and his two pals Ably & John (all seasoned campaigners) and Eddie who is just learning the ropes.

Duration: 6-11.30 pm

Tide: 3.6 (HT 10.10pm)

Weather: Medium Southerly turned Southwest as the evening went on. Light drizzle.

Bait: Lug, Black Lug,Razor, Rag, Sand-eel and Mackerel

Rigs: All sorts.

Results: 10 Bass, 3 Flounder, 2 Coalies (a few small coalies)

Catch and Release:: Yes/No Kept a couple of the Bass.

Report: We meet a couple of Dublin lads coming off the beach on our way down. They only had a dog and a pollock (or so they say, never had a pollock on this beach!). We spread out on the beach and I set up in the middle of Joe and John at my favorite spot. I pointed Eddie and Ably to a good Bass spot near some rocks. Both John, Ably, Joe and myself fished with two rods one at distance the other in close. First cast a 45cm Bass for John on lug in close. Both Joe and myself had a couple of small coalies at distance, then John had another Bass in close (50cm) on lug. Joe switched to lug and promptly landed one also just in size 45cm. I had a flounder in close on rag. Went down the beach to check on the other two, Ably had nothing but our novice Eddie had 2 Bass (45cm & 55cm) and had missed a cracking bite, all on black lug. I made a mental note to keep some black lug to myself and be less friendly in the future. Excited I went back to my rods, but nothing. Having no lug (a big mistake) I switched to razor and borrowed some lug of my neighbor. When I say borrowed it was only a technical term but did manage to get 4 lug( nice one Joe). Had a nice bite on the razor at distance but turned out to be a half decent coalie (over 1 lb). Joe had missed a decent bite after his line got caught on his tripod in his excitement to strike. Ah well he has only been fishing for about 30 years, its amazing how mild mannered men behave in such situations. Things go quite up to full tide, John gets the tea out and I text some of the people who should have come and tell them what a great night they are missing :D .
Eddie (now converted) has had 4 Bass and heads home. His latter two were only around the 35cm mark. He has kept his biggest and gone home with ideas of buying some decent tackle and getting really stuck in. I hope some of the tackle shops read this and realize all the hard work put in by the likes of me so that I can get massive discounts when I need to buy a new rod etc.. Anyway back to the action. Joe lands a 52 cm Bass on lug again, I get another flounder on the last of my lug and John gets a decent coalie. John land a nice plumb flounder ~35cm. Lug all gone we call it a night at 11pm and head back to Ably. We meet the Dublin boys again, who have come back, and still claim to have caught nothing. Ably has had three Bass (all between 40 - 45cm) in the last couple of hours on razor. No piss taking after all and while John pulls his line Ably jumps up, we laugh, he tells where to go and guess what he really does get a bite and lands another Bass ~44cm. Jammy or what. If we had any bait left we would have continue to catch, it was just one of those nights. Overall one to remember, I have to admit been a little drunk not having got a Bass, but I knew lug was the main bait on this beach so I have no excuses. Anyway needless to say were going again soon.

Great Fishing

#5 Post by drseafish »

Ya great weekend. I obviously cannot add up as we actually got 12 Bass not 10.

I also herd on the grapevine that it was a beach around Ballycotton that was hit by the poachers (over 180 Bass), Is this true? Does anyone know who the culprits were? Can we do anything?
I would hate to think that the current good times could be devasted so easily.
