Pick the rod combo you want, go and buy it.

Return home to girlfriend and present her with it. (dont panic...!)

Proceed to inform girlfriend it was purchased so she could share in your rewarding hobby whilst at the same time spend some romantic quality time together...

Take her fishing....on the windiest, roughest, coldest night you can get. Preferably on a night that there is something on telly that she is going to miss (desperate housewives, sex and the city, friends, strictly come dancing etc all good choices).

Bring the smelliest, most disgusting bait imaginable, semi rotten squid and mackerel works well.

Let her get bitten once or twice by ragworm... :D

Make sure at some stage she gets a good soaking, rogue wave, rain, whatever...

All through the evening, remark on how great it is to able to share these things with her.

There is a 99% chance that on your return home, your other half will refuse to ever again go fishing, leaving you with "her" rod combo all to yourself. In the process of doing this you will also have gained untold brownie points for doing your best to further your relationship, upshot of this is she may feel obliged to buy you a present...more tackle... :D

As I mentioned, there is only a 99% chance this will happen. There is a 1% chance she will grab the rod with both hands and proceed to absolutely love the sport. In that case, marry the girl....!

Bit of both mate.... :D Baby duties have curtailed my current partners fishing exploits but up until that she was as keen as I was. Other partners in the past however had to be discouraged by whatever means necessary.

Trust me, the cold and wet, some of them can take very well, I have yet to witness one however that can cope with being nipped by an angry King Rag.....squealing central...!
