525 mag magnets

what are the benefits of removing some of the magnets on this reel? i know the general idea is to speed up the reel but can this not be done with the bearing oil or the mag control on the side of the spool much easier? also which of the four mags do you remove, first, last or middle ones? or does this matter at all

if it is a standard 525 mag leave them all in. for fishing leaving the breaks on maximum 'slow' setting is best. the reel is fast enough. only the supermag could benefit from magnet removal as the reel has 50% more magnetic breaking. some say not to remove the magnets on supermag but to use lighter oil in bearings- chioce is yours!

i know the slow setting is safest etc. . . but i was sthinking of adding a few more yards onto the cast. read in another post, cant remember where, that with two magnets removed the 525 cats like a mag elite?!

Hi Gearoid,

Neilus probably said that if you want to get in contact with him. I think he tightens down on the float which isn't recommended as it can damage the bearings.

I normally use .4mm line (due to fishing glin) with mags set around 5 or 6 with red rf. I don't think it would be worth removing mags until your down to a 2 or 3 but if you do its the outside mags that would be removed. Neil Mackellow recommends heavier oil over heavier mags.

i have just got a 525 mag whats the best setting for the magnets as i havent got much exp with multipliers

i began by firstly tightening the end float full then slackening it off a 1/4 turn. begin casting at 9-10 and gradually decrease this until you find your limitations.i generally fish at around 2-3 dependingt on distance and the wind conditions

in sea angler magazine alan yates(i think) recommends that you set the float of the spool to "slight movement" this is usually what i do anyway

yeah just leave a little bit of play in the spool. with a 525mag, fush out all the oil from bearings with white spirits. use red rocketfuel in the bearings in the spool and leave the other ones alone. when putting oil in bearing fill a table spoon with rocketfuel and place the bearings in. slowly heat over candle. bubbles will start to come out of the bearings and when they stop the bearings are then full with rocketfuel and are ready to go into the reel after a wipe with kitchen towel. this will give you the same setting on your reel time and time again, plus an even spread of oil on bearings. i would rarely drop from maximum slow setting of 8 whilst fishing. if wind is behind me and casting a small bait on a 1hook clipped down then maybe drop to 6 for a few more yards.

Gearoid what your doing is correct and I do the same. The spool should barely move from side to side. Tightening further than this so I'm told could damage your bearings.

I used to follow the advise from the Mike Thrussel site and heat the oil with a candle in a spoon but I saw Neil Mackellow advise that this is not necessary with RF and this dates back to when normal engineering oil was used. I've never had any problems since just putting a drop or two on and agitating the bearing.

The question about mag setting is answered by what ever setting doesn't give you a birdy. I use .4mm line which slows down the reel with usually very little head wind as I fish the estuary. I presume Mark is using 0.35mm line which means a faster reel and slower mag setting. as well different 525mags need different tuning.

i wouldn't worry too much about it. like a lot of things in fishin do what works for you/ or what you are happy with. main thing is too have a reel that won't backlash and annoy you at the end of the day! i suppose just putting a drop or two of oil in bearings is easier so maybe worth a try?!
