Hey,

Gonna try Greystones on Friday morning .... any tips on what I should be trying for? and the best way and place? Was thinking the pier and maybe some shore-casting

I was in the pier yesterday from around 10.30am til 3pm. I think we caught the tide at its highest when we arrived, started going down then. We were trying feathers (different sets and colours) and plastic eels, sandeels and the like. We caught 1 little fish so small I could hide it in my hand without killing it (of course we released it). Around 4 more people came shortly after us, didn't see them catch but 2 small ones again, they were using ragworm. 3-4 came later from the beach empty handed and left empty handeed too.

So I don't know if there wasn't anything there yesterday or we were doing something wrong (very likely considering we are total beginners). Maybe you'll catch something. If so, please let me know how!!!

Use ragworm,squid ,mackerel and sandeel baits on a simple paternoster for mostly dogfish,coalies,pollock,whiting,flats,codling and the odd bass if you've very lucky.You don't need to cast out far if you're fishing the beaches(north or south),40/ 50 metres out will do you.I find the south beach better but others prefer the north beach.

i was there on sat night weather almost to bad to fish but it was fished by a good few people doggies and small whitting and ling were the order of the day caught on mackrel and rag

Cheers lads .... I've only really been spining up to now and was thinking of going the 'bottom fishing' from the pier and beach on Friday. Is that Paternoster rig suitable for this or is this usually done with a float? Can I in fact bottom fish (using Mackeral etc) from this pier?

Sorry for the stupid questions but I'm trying to get the hang of this!! :)

Be careful of bottom fishing too close to the pier wall as you might find yourself hooking into something too big for your rod or tackle ie: conger. :shock: :D

Congar eh? Nothing that a knife between the teeth, a good set of fins and some martial arts training can't sort :D

Was thinking of trying from the Bull Wall later on Friday too .... anybody any experience they want to share???

should get flounder fishing onto the lefthandside of statue to worm baits. fish to the right better off with crab as baits get stripped quick. flounder here again. chance of bass on either side. rise fishes best but start of ebb can produce.

high water in darkness can see good coalies caught from the bridge. in good numbers too. bass possible. pin whiting might break your heart though :cry: !

Gonna go looking for Bass and Dogfish (ever the optimest!) ... size 2.0 hook the way to go for both?

iv been fishin off greystones pier for the last month and all iv got is doggies, wether i go in close, or far out -DOGFISH!! i reckon the place is plagued with them... dont get me wrong. better then nothin but wen your gettin ten and twelve a night and they feel like a dead weight on the line then do ther curling up act wen un hookin them i feel like crackin ther heads off the wall ( i dont of course, but iv felt like it) startin to give up on that place...

your guaranteed! dogfish out ther mate... dont no bout the bass but you can bet your house on a few doggies once the sun goes down... dogfish city that place haha

Was there on Friday last for 5 or 6 hours using Rag Sandeel and mussel & not one Dogfish :shock:
I was shocked :)

Yeah fished from 9pm til about 2:30-3:00am right beside the harbour to the left loads of whiting and 3 small scorpion fish called Bullheads!
I'm usually plagued by Doggies there was weird not to get even one :shock:
