Reel buying advice

I was new to shore fishing last year and bought the cheapest gear on the basis that I would smash it. This year I bought a couple of replacements reels from local tackle shops on the basis that when spending a bit extra the advice and hands-on seeing would be useful. Mail order seemed distant.
The "advised" reels have packed up (not from abuse). I can not find an independent web site that tells me how reels work, which are the most reliable, or what you get in terms of quality for what you pay.
Any advice on best reliable makes?

shimano is prob da best but defo not da cheapest..........

da mustad fixed spools are also very good.

well, as far as fixed spools go, as a rough guide for shore, spend around or over 50 or 60 pounds from daiwa, penn, shimano, grauvell, okuma etc and you shouldnt go far wrong

the common multipliers for the shore are around 5500 to 7000 size with 6500 being the most common for beach fishing again say from £60 to £150.

advised to buy from the ranges from the likes of abu- 6500, penn- 525, daiwa 7ht or slosh

these are just the most commonly used and it is due to them being generally dependable that this is the case in my opinion

I have a daiwa, okuma and ron thompson. All costing from £30 - £65. The okuma being the dearest of them. I use them mainly for light work and spinning. But I think they are grand and havent shown any signs of stress yet. I got a penn 525 for the heavy work and i have to say it is great and deals with anything.

The main thing with any reels used for sea fishing - no matter what the price - you should always, always rinse them in tap water after each trip.

The salt water is very corrosive and will damage the reels badly.

As Big Phil said, for Fixed Spool, Diawa, Penn and Okuma are the best makes.

For Multipliers IMHO, Abu for Beach Work and Penn 525 SuperMag for Beach and/or Rough Ground, Diawa SLOSH for the real rough stuff and Conger....

You really need to oil and service the reels regularly to keep them in good order...
