Strangford and Portaferry 21.10.06
People: Myself, Drew and Hairy
Duration: 6pm - 1am
Tide: Low - High
Weather: Very calm, a great night, showers moved in as we packed up
Bait: Mack, rag, sandeel, squid
Rigs: Various
Results: Pollack, Coalies, Mackeral (2), Rockling, Codling?
Catch and Release:: Yes/No
Report:
Well another fantastic night out for the lads, Drew and Hairy had congering on their minds aswell as the beach rods out, i got the first fish of the day on my wee mini solid fibre glass spinning out, a wee pollack caught dangling, this was soon follwed by another about the same at range for Drew and hairy managed a small rockling. I never bottom fished at all really, i instead decided to use a toby that Kieran had sent me sometime ago, almost a Pollack a cast but they were all very small and not much bigger than the spinner itself! Drew then borrowed my light spinning outfit and added a trace, he was soon pulling in 2's and 3's but the best sport on the wee rod was provided by 2 mackeral that the lucky bugger got, it was quite strange watching mackeral shoals move in and around the area, only lit up by the pier floodlights. Nothing else really to report from Strangford so we boarded the Ferry shortly before 10pm and went over to Portaferry, again drew and hairy decided to fish the bottom, this produced a few very decent coalies to around 2lb, hairy got another rockling. The amount of small pollack below the pier was plague proportions, i decided to spin again but for some reason only got 1 fish in several dozen casts, strange as just across the lough it produced dozens! Anyway, i soon got fed up and brought out my fly rod for the first time at sea, now this is when the entertainment really started! I used a small shrimp pattern fly with gold eyes, the small pollack were attacking everything including the knot at the beginning of the leader, i gave the rod over to drew and he really seemed to be enjoying the sport, even hairy and his water flogging / lashing produced a fish! 3 flies were lost on the mast of a boat directly behind us but it never dampened the spirits, the rain however did and it was time to pack up and leave, all in all a great nights craic, even if the majority of the fish were tiny. I have a few videos of drew casting the fly and getting a couple of fish, shall be added when i can which isn't tonight!

I must pick myself up a cheap fly setup and give this a go at some stage anyone any ideas on where to pick up a cheap starter kit that would do the job.
