Eoghan, Dont forget the cuddly toy.... :D
G.Wyse, I have no idea how it ended up there in such good condition, It was well up the tide line and I can only presume it was the big tides over the weekend that left it there, high and dry. I would have thought a gull would have been at it at the very least. Cant say I've ever had a problem with crabs at Garretstown to be honest but you would surelyu have expected one or two to have made the find!!
In fairness it was Paul who spotted it, just a few feet from where we parked the Jeep, a lucky find and well spotted. Couldnt possibly have tried to claim I caught it, he would have had me ruined....... :D
Thanks for the help lads in clearing that up as we were thinking along the lines of triggers and giltheads and were of course way off. Not surprising

WHAT IS IT?
Is it a scad (horse mackeral) - forked tail - deeper than mackeral and without the blue stripes.

Dammit, we've been rumbled!
Of course its a scad. This is the picture of the said scad before we proceeded to transform it into a rays bream by running over it with a steam roller and spraying it with a couple of coats of silver paint.
