penn 525 mag or abu garcia 6500

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

The problem with your reel sonds like the drag has oil or grease in it.

Tighten the star drag fully and then try to pull line off the reel (without pushing the freespool button), if it is easy to do this then the drag is almost certainly contaminated. The good news is that this is easy sorted.

As for the 525, it is my favourite fishing reel, casts as well as an Abu with the winching power of a Daiwa SLosh 8). The problem that you have there is that there are not too many of them knocking about second hand cheap.

I had the same problem with an old 7HT a while back. I replaced the clutch washers (spares from Daiwa) for a few euros. It's a fairly simple repair. Problem solved. :D

There are a few on ebay at the moment....

I bought mine from ebay in good condition for 54 sterling +p&p and it has been fantastic. I also bought a SL20SH, SL30SH, 7HT turbo, 6500 Sports Mag and two 6500 Mag Elites and all have been just as described by the seller.

I second that, and easy to handle too. Just watch your line level and use your mags and you're laughing.

The drag washers should not need to be replaced, simply wash them with lighter fluid and leave them to dry. Easy as that. 8)
